one day, when computers are cheap and pumping some serious numbers; until then the average user needs the 200$ ~ 300$ gaming console
ps3!
I spend more time on my 360 because you can play your own music in-game. The achievement points are often a big draw, as well as the online interaction is often a lot more user friendly. However, I'm on my 4th 360 now because all 360s will fail at some point.  I use my PS3 for all my video purposes, though.  360 is a bit more annoying for streaming videos as well as for controlling them.   The 360 also forces you to buy a subscription, and even requires you to buy whatever is necessary for going online, whereas the PS3 has wireless online capabilities built in, and online play is free.  I'd go with 360 in the end, however, solely based on the online community. If you are planning to spend most of your time offline or only single player, it is really a toss-up.  However, blu-ray and much better hardware that doesn't break every 3 months is always a plus.  In the end, I think no matter your decision, you'll be happy...
unless you buy a Wii

Guys - if your Wii is hacked, then it is a wonderful thing!  I have all the emulators optimised for my big screen TV  ;)

Plus there are some fantastic Wii games.   Three recent greats where:
1)  The Conduit
2) Dead Space Extraction
3) Punch Out!

Plus, they are making a New Super Mario Bros. for Wii   :D
For the price, and how easy it is to hack them - it is worth the buy!   :D

Sure, hacking it can bring about quite a few nice additions, and a 360 can as well (though not to the same extent, of course), but I'd still say it wouldn't warrant its price vs its performance when compared to the PS3 or 360.  Its graphics are lacking, its game library is full of horrible games, with a few gems; it's online is absurd, with almost no identity given to players, nor communication; its ability for multimedia seems rather poor, and its controls are still not all that accurate, thus any games that'd REALLY benefit from motion sensing are not well implemented.  I remember when Wii first came out, I was expecting swordplay, lightsaber duels, etc, with fluid and accurate game response to my motions, but it has turned into mostly "wiggle your remote horizontally for a horizontal attack, shove it forward for an impale" etc etc.

Then again, this post is pretty off-topic since the Wii wasn't even mentioned as a choice.  I just found myself disappointed with my purchase often.  Still, my girlfriend enjoys playing Mario Party 8 and Brawl on it, so I will keep it.  If they put out Mario Party 9, it might see play from me again, but they haven't even announced it.

But yeah, I'd still say the 360 is the way to go if you 1) want online play, 2) really enjoy looking back on achievements you've made, or 3) enjoy having your own music in-game, rather than the game's soundtrack, but otherwise PS3 would be the way to go.
xbox:
win: console specific games (halo, gears, fable II)
win: Xbox Live
win: graphics are really good
win: controller is SUPER-COMFY
win: play music in the game
lose: no blue ray
lose: have to buy a wifi thingy (but the wifi thing for the original xbox works, so its not that bad of a price if you can find one of those)
lose: not much modability

ps3:
win: blue ray
win: graphics
win: wifi included
win: free online play
lose: not many really great console specific games (don't flame this. for the most part, the standout is LittleBigPlanet, which is amazing. Killzone 2 is good, but halo is better IMHO, and duty kinda beats both of those, and that's a multiplatform. Resistance is just a repackaging of Gears. most of the games that are really popularly played on the ps3 are multiplatform games.)
lose: psn gaming is far inferior to Xbox Live

That's it. hope that helps, i really tried to be fair and unbiased.
