one day, when computers are cheap and pumping some serious numbers; until then the average user needs the 200$ ~ 300$ gaming console
Computers aren't that expensive, especially if you factor in the cost of the console games. I mean when the consoles just came out, they were like $600US or something.
As for numbers, if you haven't realized, the current computer's CPU and GPU are
WAY more beast than the PS3 or the 360. In terms of numbers, a core i7 will rip up the 360's processor many many times over, and I'm pretty sure a high end current CPU will also completely rape the 360's "old technology" GPU.
It's just that computers aren't as optimized for playing games as consoles are.

Lol, watch it again. It says fermi has 8x the performance on double precision calculations compared to Cuda...
Seriously man, how the hell did you manage to translate that to
"fermi" graphics cards will run 8x faster then the 295gtx... Like what?!? You sound as if you're getting paid by NVidia.
Firstly, wee're talking about double precision calculations, not overall GPU speed. Increasing the speed of 1 part by 8x does NOT mean increasing the speed of everything by 8x (that's like saying if my RAM is 8x faster, my whole computer becomes 8x faster). Secondly, wee're talking about "faster than cuda", which is of the GPGPU area, which is NOT graphics processing. And where did you get "8x faster than 295gtx" from? I never heard 295gtx that mentioned anywhere, in that video.

i did't tranlate anything,. its whot is said in the clip,. ;)
and yess,.. consoles are far more optimized for games,..
also if you watch the clip "See video of Jen-Hsun Huang announcing Fermi" <<(that's the clip i mean) at the start you see a picture comparing all graphics cards made by nvidia so yes it prob is waaaaaayyy faster,. maybe even 8x faster,.. ;p
Hellgiver Wrote:Sure, hacking it can bring about quite a few nice additions, and a 360 can as well (though not to the same extent, of course), but I'd still say it wouldn't warrant its price vs its performance when compared to the PS3 or 360.
I definitely agree that I wouldn't make Wii the only console I own.
But at the same time - it's not to be missed.
The Wii hacking scene is the hottest in the world right now ! And that's a fact. It is even way more active than the PSP scene...
Hellgiver Wrote:Its graphics are lacking, its game library is full of horrible games, with a few gems;
The graphics look fine to me. You won't find anything in 1080p, but buy yourself a pair of component cables - and hook it up to a decent TV, and it looks fine ;)
Wii has tons of good games. You just have to wade through a endless library of spoon to know which ones are the gems. But then again, all consoles have too many chocolatety games released.
I've never been a graphics whore anyway. I believe that substance and fun is more important. Incredible graphics are nice, but really are secondary to fun factor.
Hellgiver Wrote:it's online is absurd, with almost no identity given to players, nor communication;
Well that's not true... The online structure is very poor - granted. But you do have a Friend ID #, that allows you to play any online game, against any friend you desire. Also, there is Wii Speak now, so you have camera, and microphone that you can utilize for online play ;)
Hellgiver Wrote:its ability for multimedia seems rather poor,
My Wii is hacked :)
So the multimedia abilities are overall even greater than any other console. The ONLY thing it can't play is blu-ray.
Hellgiver Wrote:and its controls are still not all that accurate, thus any games that'd REALLY benefit from motion sensing are not well implemented. I remember when Wii first came out, I was expecting swordplay, lightsaber duels, etc, with fluid and accurate game response to my motions, but it has turned into mostly "wiggle your remote horizontally for a horizontal attack, shove it forward for an impale" etc etc.
You obviously don't realize that Wii Motion Plus has been released ?
soooo...
are wee gonna get a follow up from the original poster? id like to see which one he chose...

Well, he only has a couple posts, and hasn't been back to EP in days.
He may not be around anymore...
At any rate - I'm more interested in Hellgivers response, than what the original poster bought. :p

I was watching the main clip on the page that you linked to...
http://www.nvidia.com/object/fermi_architecture.html
It says 8x faster on
double precision calculations,
than cuda.
Both double precision calculations and Cuda are for GPGPU, not actual graphical processing, so has very little to do with graphics processing speed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPGPU
Now I also watched that Jen-Hsun Huang video. It also says double precision calculations everywhere.
Vegetano1 Wrote:at the start you see a picture comparing all graphics cards made by nvidia so yes it prob is waaaaaayyy faster,. maybe even 8x faster,.. ;p
That picture at the start doesn't say anything about speed. It just compares how many transistors each GPU has...
that fermi chip sounds tasty

over excited,. i guess,. but the card shown in clip does look like a ordinary pci-express graphics card,.. so i still guessing this card can be used for games too,.. i don't see why not,.
Quote:Fermi makes GPU and CPU co-processing pervasive by addressing the full-spectrum of computing applications. Designed for C++ and available with a Visual Studio development environment, it makes parallel programming easier and accelerates performance on a wider array of applications than ever before – including dramatic performance acceleration in ray tracing, physics, finite element analysis, high-precision scientific computing, sparse linear algebra, sorting, and search algorithms.
Fermi features several major innovations:
• 512 CUDA cores
• NVIDIA Parallel DataCache technology
• NVIDIA GigaThread™ engine
• ECC support
this does't say you can't play games with fermi,.. i have had a workstation card and worked fine playing games,..
also,. question: fermi is still cuda right<>? does say 512 cuda cores
edit: fixed the quotes
Vegetano1 Wrote:over excited,. i guess,. but the card shown in clip does look like a ordinary pci-express graphics card,.. so i still guessing this card can be used for games too,.. i don't see why not,.
Ofcourse it can play games. I'm just saying it's not going to be 8x faster at playing games.
Vegetano1 Wrote:also,. question: fermi is still cuda right<>? does say 512 cuda cores
Yeah. Pretty much faster implementation of Cuda, if I understood correctly.
