Optical media was significantly cheaper compared to flash at the time.
1GB MSPD cards in 2005/6 were like $140 each (yeah, MSPD not the cheapest, but you get the idea).  1.8GB UMD probably costs a few dollars at most, probably less than $1 when mass produced.
