Not really.  HD5970 is faster most of the time.  Unless you mean single GPU, but then NVidia had that since GTX480.  As for absolute highest performance, if you SLI 3 GTX580, that should win (you the money wasting award).

Either way, who really cares about highest end performance.  Anything higher than 40-50fps and you can't see any difference.

Of course, should wait for the R6970 to compare.
Typically, AMD's designs are simpler than Nvidia's, so it's quite a surprise that AMD managed to take the lead in the 5xxx series.
