That's only the OP.  No big deal because the OP is a one off thing.  Look at the main files... Thora = 900MB per 1080p episode.  Coalgirls = 1600MB per 1080p episode.

And I personally think it's a good idea to stick more bitrate into the OP (lower crf for OP than main episode), because if you've actually seen the OP, it does actually need the bits to look good (it's much more "visual" than the main episode).  Also, improving the OP has a very small cost to total size (at most like 50MB or something), while changing anything in the main episodes will have a huge cost.

(21/06/2010 01:37 AM)ZiNgA BuRgA Wrote:  Honestly, I'd have to choose CG out of the two.

That's based on the sizes for the OP.  Would you still choose Coalgirls knowing the true sizes of the files?  (900 vs 1600)

You said they look the same anyway.  If they look the same, the smaller one is superior.

No, FLAC is dumb.  Really, can you honestly hear the difference between lossless and high bitrate lossy?  I seriously doubt it.

So maybe you're willing to spend 1500KB/s on an audio stream, just so you can get the placebo effect in your mind that the audio is audibly better, I'm not particularly fond of doing that.  (Hell, why not go lossless video too?  Huffyuv all the way).

AC3 is also dumb for that matter, because if they're going to re-encode it anyway, why not choose a more efficient codec instead like AAC?

Are you just imagining things in your head?

1. You CANNOT see the video details for Thora, they blanked it out.
2. He DID NOT say Coalgirls had better video either.

Depends on source.  If source is AC3, FLAC isn't going to improve quality.

Source should be lossless.

So? Disregarding size, FLAC is better. I'm not going to argue about it, but it's like saying "lets use lossy codecs when wee have enough resources for lossless". BluRay, for example - and these are BluRay rips - it's not a "bad" thing that they are providing equivalent quality.

2. He said he'd choose CoalGirls between the two. And as far as he mentioned he was talking about choosing CG from the details, not looking at the video.

Sound like a good replacement for Index. Thanks Heartless.

Disregarding size, raw RBG > everything.

Less waste space on lossless codecs when wee can't actually tell the difference between the two.

From the size and audio I think...

"From the above, it looks like Thora is going _less_ than crf14, as file size is bigger (note: bigger at same visual quality = worse), plus they're using lossy audio track"

But he didn't know that in the actual episodes, Coalgirls wastes much more bitrate than Thora.  Really... would YOU download an extra 700MB for something that looks the same?

Ahaha, of course not, but so long as it isn't a pointlessly high bitrate it's retaining some kind of detail/quality that may only be noticeable on very large displays. I don't have very large displays so I can't judge. I suppose in that respect the higher bitrate encode will look better when scaled up as well.

by not top grade i mean it's not as epic as you know, other stuffs, but it's still damn good to me.

Possibly, but I believe crf14 will always be overkill, especially on HD material.

HD = less detail density and complexity per macro-block size, so the crf algorithm will penalize HD stuff less compared to SD stuff (as crf reduces quantizer based on complexity).  Also, any loss in quality will be less visible in HD material, also because of the fact that everything is more spread out.

(Also, just because there's a mathematical difference doesn't mean your eyes can actually tell that difference).
