this is a bit of a n00b tip and sorry to offend anyone if you already know this..but...
if you push the shutter button half way down the camera will focus then beep saying its focused, if you leave that pressure on the button it wills tay focused right as it is, allowing you to prepare for a photo before shooting it...then when youa re ready to press the button the last 1/2 of the way down it will take the shot. You can use this also to focus on someones face then move your focal point to a better position to frame the image offcenter then take your picture.
if you are just pressing eht button expecting a photo NOW...then it will take longer because it has to focus first, then shoot. :-/
maybe that helps a little..but you will generally focus on your subject better that way.

that orange light can cause baaad distortion and blur,,,

Well that is what PS is for.
Also Noise is inevitable. Especially with a regular point-and-shoot.

Well that really is not a 'technique'.
It is just the 'proper' way of taking a photo, I took photography classes. This is the first thing they make you do. LEARN TO FOCUS!
