 Corsair's New XMS2 Dominator DDR2-10000 RAM
12/03/2007 10:50 AM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
[Image: DOMINATORside2.jpg]

QuoteCeBIT'07 new product avalanche is about to hit us like a hundred walkyries brandishing bratwursts, cellphones dipped in sauerkraut and RAM modules like the new Corsair XMS2 Dominator. This 2 Gbytes DDR2 module is now available in PC2-9136 and PC2-10000 speeds and they come with more acronyms than a NASA launch checklist: they have DHX (Dual-path Heat Xchange) with a dedicated heatsink for the PCB (printed circuit board). On top of that, they are NVIDIA SLI ready and feature EPP (Enhanced Performance Profiles), which enhances SPD (Serial Presence Detect) and apparently is great for over-clocking. OK, Corsair. WEE (whatever). I'll be waiting for the gold version myself. I don't care about overclocking, I just want the bling-bling.

 Microsoft’s antivirus deletes users’ e-mails
12/03/2007 02:07 AM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
MPORTANT FOR USERS OF MICROSOFT ONECARE.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE

[frame]QuoteMicrosoft has admitted that its Live OneCare security suite has been accidentally deleting some users’ Outlook and Outlook Express e-mails.

According to postings on Microsoft’s OneCare forum, erasures have been caused when the antivirus programme finds a virus in an e-mail attachment. Instead of then quarantining that single e-mail, users have reported that entire .pst or .dbx files -— the personal folder where non-Exchange Server users’ messages and other details are kept -— have been quarantined or, in some cases, even deleted.

One user commented on the forum: “Is there a chance to recover it? If not, OneCare will have done more damage than any virus in my 30 years of active computing.

11/03/2007 10:19 PM Posted by: bstronga in PSP Customisation Developments
Thanks to Zingaburga's RCO Editor 1.12 wee have entered (again) into a new era of XMB customizing *overexaggerate* ;p

Some people may already saw my thread over at ... QJ (...)

So this is what I've found out so far [for the topmenu_plugin.rco (xmenu) but it should be valid for the other RCOs which contain MIGs too]
1. Horizontal position. 0=center, minus=left
2. Vertical Position, 0=center, minus=down
3. Zoom
4. Strength of Red Colour Channel (0 to 1; doesn't affect xmenu)
5. Strength of Green Colour Channel (0 to 1; doesn't affect xmenu)
6. Strength of Blue Colour Channel (0 to 1; doesn't affect xmenu)
7. Strength of Alpha Colour Channel (0 to 1; doesn't affect xmenu)

8. Width    \ draws a
9. Height   / white boxed cursor

10. ?

11. Stretches icon including text in width \ stable
12. Stretches icon including text in height / even if entered somewhere

13. Zooms in/out the main icons as a whole. Also stable, doesn't include the text though

14. ?

Picture of 13.

In the hex values
15. ?
16. ?
17. Tells how many main menu icons there are! 7 seems to be the only one which doesn't freeze the PSP besides the default 6. « very interesting!
18. ?
19. Action command for X button. 64=enter
20. ?
21. Action command for Triangle Button. 1C=option menu
More info

Some other examples

Intel to Mass Produce Phase-Change Memory In 2007
11/03/2007 02:09 PM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
Quote[Image: 4100_phasechange90nm.jpg]Even if you usually skip over dull PC articles, this one's worth reading. Earlier this week, Intel announced their plans to mass produce phase-change memory (PCM or PRAM) by the end of 2007.

So why the hell does this matter to you, oh searcher for the USB bust-enhancer? From Intel:

The phase-change memory gets pretty close to Nirvana...

PRAM is the Chosen One in a world where volatile, evil flash memory has invaded our homes. That's because Flash memory relies on trapping and releasing electrons to store information. This process takes long 10 nanoseconds, but more importantly, leads to a limited number of read/write cycles.

But PRAM technology works on a the principles of chemistry, changing a substance like chalcogenide from solid to liquid and measuring that state (similar to RW optical media, interestingly enough). Not only does this process take less time at 5ns, but it supports around 100 million write cycles. Plus, Intel is claiming their test models have a 10-year data retention rate at 85-degrees, making it feasible for archiving your pornography.

Unfortunately, it looks like Intel plans to phase in (no pun intended) the memory as RAM, not as a storage device. Tear. Wee want some awesome solid fluid state hard drives. Now!

 VIPeR Battlefield Robot: Maverick Hunter
11/03/2007 02:00 PM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
Quote[Image: 2007_03_08t102437_450x342_us_israel_robot-1.jpg]No, wee are not teasing you with the headline. Robots officially kill people.

Developed by Elbit Systems Ltd for Israel's army to avoid hand-to-hand combat, the VIPeR is about the size of a small television and easily rolls up stairs and down into trenches (ok, with that trenches part wee kinda went freestyle, but the real list includes dark alleys, caves and narrow tunnels).

And when you are bored of its standard bomb disposal functions, the VIPeR can carry an Uzi and grenades that can be controlled (unleashing hell) from a remote location via camera feed. Wee knew it was just a matter of time until videogames got this good.

But our favorite part is the small "e" in VIPeR, as if Elbit Systems wasn't quite committed enough to go with the name "VIP3R" and really do some serious pwnage.

Seagate: 1TB iPods Possible in 2014
11/03/2007 01:50 PM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
QuoteOk, I admit it, the iPod part was just the shameless hook. But that doesn't make the possibility any less true.

According to Seagate's projections on hard drive capacity:

[Wee show] a 2.5-inch drive reaching 1TB by 2013. Using that calculation and assuming 40% growth stays as the annual growth rate, a 1.8-inch would reach 1TB by 2014.

On one hand 1TB seems so close, but maybe Seagate would be a bit more inclined if they knew just how many Cher CDs Brian Lam* has in his closet.

 Sony derives inspiration from homebrew
10/03/2007 10:10 PM Posted by: dasme in PSP News
Despite the lack of PSP-related activities and updates at this year's Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2007, Sony is making sure to let everyone know that they are not neglecting their own handheld console.

PSP updates - hardware versus software. Though the possibility of any hardware update is still mostly vague, Sony's product manager John Koller promises that the evolution of the PSP will be done through its software, since it has, afterall, gone through 13 firmware updates since it was first released in 2005.

Sony: eye on homebrew community. Asked whether the PSP will ever have features which were first made available via homebrew, Koller admits that yes, Sony has been keeping an eye on what the homebrew community has been up to: "Future firmware revisions may incorporate some of the additions that custom firmware users have been able to enjoy."

In fact, Koller even points out that "RSS is actually from homebrew."

On the other hand though, the chances of getting other much-awaited functions such as full resolution AVC support and a PSP movie download service still remain bleak, and no new developments for these features have been mentioned.
