Dell, Alienware Start Selling Towers with 1TB Drives

[Image: terabytedrive.jpg]

QuoteGot a need for some extra storage space? Dell and Alienware just added the option for you to slap a 1 terabyte drive in one of their XPS, Area 51, or Aurora towers. That's a hell of a lot of space, although whether or not it's smarter to spread your storage out over multiple drives with less capacity or to consolidate everything into one gigantic drive is up for debate. It looks like getting the 1TB bragging rights will cost you $320 more than a 500GB drive, but it's only $20 more than having a 1TB RAID with 2 500GB drives.

Man, 1TB drives… it feels like some sort of milestone, doesn't it? I remember back in the day when I had a 1GB drive and I had to delete an MP3 if I wanted to download a new one. That sucked.

 Redesigned Boeing Aircraft to Replace 747s?
15/03/2007 11:58 AM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
[Image: boeing-x48b1.jpg]

QuoteThat's the promise of the blended-wing, a radically new kind of aircraft set to take to the skies for the first time this month. Originally conceived by McDonnell Douglas and developed by NASA, the blended-wing merges fuselage and wings and eliminates the tail, reducing drag. That makes it vastly more fuel-efficient than regular "tube-and-wing" jets, according to Boeing (Charts) engineer Norm Princen.

His X-48B blended-wing prototype, now on the runway at Edwards Air Force Base, is only about a 10th the size of the 240-foot-wingspan craft he hopes to build. But the Pentagon is watching keenly. "Blended-wing technology can cost-effectively fill many roles required by the Air Force," says Capt. Scott Van-Hoogen of the Air Vehicles Directorate. As a tanker, for example, it could refuel two planes in midair at the same time.

For now Boeing is focused on making a military version of the plane by 2022. But by 2030 blended-wing aircraft could be carrying commercial passengers. Last November a team from MIT and Cambridge University unveiled the SAX-40, a blended-wing design that promises to be more fuel-efficient than a Toyota (Charts) Prius - and thanks in part to the engine placement, just as quiet (at 63 decibels).

These designs still have a bumpy ride before they'll be accepted by airlines: How to build a flat pressurized cargo hold is one challenge; another is asking passengers to sit 25 seats away from the window. Still, the rising costs of air travel may leave future road warriors with no choice but to blend into a blended-wing.

 Wii on PSP!!!
14/03/2007 07:30 PM Posted by: YoYoBallz in PSP News
A person by the name of obiwan222222 has gotton his psp to Strem his nintendo wii using using Location Free support. :suprised:  Downfall, it has a 6 secend delay.... yeah it sucks but i think this is a very big step for the psp homebrew...  You can't really play your nintendo wii on your psp, lets put it this way, its like a very small screen for your wii. ( that is kinda slow)

Source: YouTube

Here's what QJ had to say about it.

QJ Wrote:While wee ourselves aren't quite sure how useful this ultimately is, wee have to admit that a number of us here at QJ found it cool anyways. QJ reader nano alerts us to this YouTube video where YouTube user obiwan222222 claims been able to play the Wii on his PSP using Location Free support.

Yes, wee can hear it now. Some of you folks are probably thinking fake already. Well, given that he just seems to be using his PSP as a monitor, and isn't really doing anything more complicated than that, wee'll leave the debunking to you folks.

Anyway, on the chance that this isn't fake, the only handy application that comes to mind is that this might serve as a great solution if in case your Wiimote strap just snapped, and you're in desperate need of a screen.

 How to easily get viruses (or whatever) past anti-virus programs
14/03/2007 03:05 AM Posted by: ZiNgA BuRgA in Tech News
This guide is intended for educational purposes.  All the methods presented here a perfectly legal, however, it is possible to use these techniques to perform illegal actions.  I am not responsible for your actions, so if you can't control your own actions, not to use this info for illegal purposes, stop reading now.

Okay, basically, this shows you how simple it is to get a "virus" (PE file - eg EXEs or DLLs) past a virus scanner.  I've used this to get pwdump2 past the library's Norton A/V many times XD

  1. You need a copy of Morphine (alternative link)
  2. After extracting the package, copy morphine.exe to where the EXEs and DLLs are you want to get past the A/V scanner
  3. Make a backup copy of your EXEs/DLLs!
  4. Open Notepad and copy the following:

    Code:
    morphine.exe myEXE.exe
    pause

    (replace myEXE.exe with the EXE or DLL filename)

  5. Save this file as r.bat in the same folder as morphine.exe (and your other EXEs/DLLs)
  6. Run r.bat

Your malicious EXE/DLL should now not be detected by any A/V software :P

 Handmade Wooden-Skinned Car Is a Craftsman's Masterpiece
13/03/2007 10:34 AM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
[Image: tyraneii2.jpg]The Tryane II is an example of fine craftsmanship by a guy who is aptly named Friend Wood. He spent 2000 hours building the car; a key part of that process involved gluing and stapling together strips of mahogany veneer, and then buffing it to a mirror-like finish.

It's gorgeous, and weighs just 900 pounds. It actually has an internal combustion engine inside that's said to be capable of 70 to 90 miles per gallon. Wouldn't that be a fire hazard? And, wee'd hate to see what would happen if this thing got into an accident, splintering up like so many pieces of balsa wood.

But those practical considerations are beside the point. The car will probably end up functioning as a really unusual, one-of-a-kind coffee table, or at least in a coffee table book.

 Hitachi-LG Brings Blu-ray and HD DVD Together in Combo Drive
13/03/2007 06:29 AM Posted by: dasme in Tech News
[Image: ggw-h10n_48.jpg]

QuoteConsidering they had the first 4x Blu-ray burner, wee're not too shocked Hitachi-LG is also claiming dibs on the first combo Blu-ray/HD DVD drive for your PC. The wonderfully named GGW-H10N Super Multi Blue will playback, read, and record single and dual-layer Blu-ray discs (at 4x or 3.5x) and it'll also have the skills to playback HD DVDs. Think of it as a BH100 for your PC. Here's the catch, when the drive hits shelves in May it'll go for $1,200, which is a little too rich for our blood.

 PSP2 (Rumor)
12/03/2007 02:58 PM Posted by: michaelp in PSP News
[Image: psp2coming.jpg]

And not only that, it looks like it's coming later this year. There have been rumors ever since the DS Lite hit that Sony was also planning a redesign of its portable. Some of those rumors have ground in reality, some of them are just wishful thinking. Nothing official has been announced, and Sony has shot down any chatter regarding a redesign saying it's not happening. With all this, PSP2 looks to be a pipe-dream — Like it's not happening.

Apparently, it is.

Various third party and highly placed sources state that the PSP2 is coming. Speculation is swirling around the industry, and third party publishers are hoping to tie their games to the PSP2 launch. Thing is, Sony has yet to pass along any information about when that will be. Meaning wee won't see big third party titles at launch.

Word has it that a big announcement will most likely hit at E3 with Sony unveiling the redesigned portable. An announcement of launch date (which should be sometime 4th quarter) is entirely possible as well. The redesigned product apparently does exist as this is what wee've heard so far:

    * The screen is gorgeous
    * The loads are faster
    * Improved buttons
    * Internal flash — 8GB
    * Possible touch-screen
    * Possible built-in camera
    * Uses UMD

The recent blockbuster success in Japan should prove that the PSP is anything but dead and deserving of a make-over. Stay tuned!
