300,000 Jailbreakers get Rick roll Jailbreak
13/12/2012 07:20 AM Posted by: Venom in Tech News
[Image: Dream-JB.jpg]

In the past week over 300,000 people had gotten their hopes up for this guy who claimed to have an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 on all iDevices and that he would release it on the 22nd. Many Jailbreak devs had said it was fake but most of the people ignored the warning. He had posted a "proof" video yesterday and people were unsure it was legit. He then said that he was going to release it last night instead of the 22nd which made people even more excited. at 8:50 a "download link" was posted on his site. and over 300,000 people clicked on it  within 2 minutes. And instead of finding a jailbreak, they got rickrolled.
shortly after the rickroll his twitter was closed and his website said this
DreamJB was intended as a social experiment. In the matter of a mere week, over 20,000 people followed @DreamJailbreak on twitter.

'This website had over 300,000 unique viewers. People believed in a "jailbreak" that originally provided no proof at all.

There are services out there that charge for jailbreaks that are intended to be free. Imagine what could have happened should this have gone for sale?

The provided proof tonight was intended as a final boost to the viewers before this message was released.

Let this be a lesson to the public. PLEASE be careful when it comes to jailbreak solutions that are advertised outside of the prominent and accepted dev teams. Do some research and follow them on Twitter now.

Dismiss any claims made by anybody, unless it has been confirmed from the dev team members.

Should a real jailbreak ever surface, they'll be the first to give it the OK.

This experiment is exactly as it was named. Simply just a dream.

Cheers."

Apple attempts to trademark the leaf
10/12/2012 01:09 PM Posted by: whjms in Tech News
Quote:If you thought Apple patenting the rectangle was a gratuitous abuse of intellectual property, you may be pained to hear that Apple has now applied to trademark a leaf.

Specifically, Apple wants to protect the leaf on its company logo. Apple applied for to the European Trademark Registry on 3 December, with the help of London lawyers from Edwards Wildman.

Here's a screengrab of the submitted application:

Apple: trademarking the leaf. The white space around the leaf next?
The trademark application covers 10 classes of products including computers, jewellery, educational material, footwear, film streaming services and paper packaging for audio tapes. [emphasis added]

So put the brakes on any plans to put sharp-ended tilted ovals on trainers or text books, because if the trademark is granted, you may end up on the receiving end of legal action from Cupertino.

According to the filing, Apple previously submitted a trademark application for the leaf in China.

Wee've requested a comment from Edwards Wildman, but have received no reply. ®
The sad part is that this'll be approved, and all the trees in the world will be cut down for violating the patent. :(
EDIT: MATH COPIED THEM

Japan Police Use PS Vita to Catch Criminal
07/12/2012 07:00 AM Posted by: Venom in Tech News
[Image: xlarge.jpg]

Article from Kotaku
-------------------------------------------

Sony brands the PS Vita as more than simply a game portable. Maybe it should call the machine a "crime fighter", too?

This week's episode of Gekiroku: Keisatsu Micchaku 24ji!! (think Cops, but in Japan) followed the cyber police division in Fukuoka Prefecture.

In one scene, the cyber cops were tracking down a criminal for identity fraud, who allegedly had been using several different computer addresses to illegally buy and sell. During the investigation, an officer whipped out "a device to check WiFi connections". That "device" was a PS Vita.

Japanese site GetNews believes that the investigator carried a PS Vita because, perhaps, it's better able to pick up WiFi signals than smartphones or tablet computers—even better than iPhones or iPod Touches. Also, the site noted how it's pretty easy to walk into a store and get a PS Vita.

Knowing how explicit product placement can sometimes be on Japanese TV, I might be suspicious about this—that this is just a product plug. That is, if the PS Vita wasn't introduced as a "WiFi checker".

For Sony, it's probably good to see the police using the PS Vita. At this point, it's good to see anyone using one.

 vhbl on psvita firmware 2.01
05/12/2012 05:07 PM Posted by: voyager9 in PSP News
Quote:This will not come as a big surprise for those of you who know how these things work, but it’s always nice to have a confirmation: VHBL still runs fine on Vita’s firmware 2.01, and The Z proves it to us with a video.

Video evidence

Quote:video showcases Frostegater’s latest port of VHBL to an unknown usermode exploit in a PSP Game. On the video wee can see VHBL running Zelda on Masterboy (Game boy and master system emulator), Wagic (Collectible card game), and PSPFiler (File manager for the PSP).

This is most likely the same version that was running a few days ago on 2.0, as wee can safely assume Sony did not patch any undisclosed vulnerability with 2.01. There is still no word on a release yet, and it is still unclear if Frostegater will focus on a VHBL release or work on his own port of Total_Noob’s CEF, since he seems to also be in possession of a PSP Kernel exploit. As a reminder for those who just joined us, wee had a PSP Kernel exploit available up to 1.81, but that got patched in 2.0. At this point wee still have lots of usermode exploits that should allow fairly easily to port VHBL (which gives us access to limited PSP homebrew compatibility), but PSP kernel exploits are a treat which is much more difficult to find.

Well as I like to keep everyone here informed and what not this is definatly a step in the right direction! (especially since I updated....so I guess I'm at fault for that partially) Dotdotdot

Water + Organic Material Found on Mercury
01/12/2012 05:25 AM Posted by: ZiNgA BuRgA in Random News
Quote:NASA has confirmed a surprising, counterintuitive discovery. The burning hell known Mercury—the closest planet to the Sun—has water. Frozen water. Three new research papers, based on data obtained by the Messenger spacecraft, show undeniable evidence.

It's not just a little bit of water, but a huge amount: enough to cover Washington D.C. in ice. But there is more: there's organic material too! NASA researchers believe that Mercury received this material in the same way as Earth did, millions of years ago. And that material, they say, were the building blocks of life.

[...]

But thanks to its angle in relation to our home star, there are areas that are always in shadow. That's where the ice sleeps, protected from the sun's radiation by this shadow and dark organic deposits that insulate the water from the sun.

Even more exciting: NASA scientists think that this "complex mix of organic materials" is similar to the material that eventually gave rise to life on Earth. And as in Earth's case, scientists speculate that this material was probably brought to Mercury by comets colliding with the planet's surface.

So it looks like Aliens From Mercury, as opposed to Mars.

Couple dead, teen missing after family swept to sea trying to save dog Read more: ht
26/11/2012 12:53 AM Posted by: Incadude in Random News
Quote:A couple died and their 16-year-old son went missing after being swept into sea in Northern California while trying to save their dog, authorities said Sunday.
The family was at Big Lagoon, a beach north of Eureka, Saturday afternoon when the dog chased after a thrown stick and got pulled into the ocean by eight to ten foot waves, said Dana Jones, a state Parks and Recreation district superintendent.
Jones said the boy went after the dog, prompting his father to go after them. She said the teenager was able to get out, but when he didn't see his father, he and his mother went into the water looking for him.
"Both were dragged into the ocean," Jones said.
The Times-Standard reports the couple's daughter called police.
Jones said a park ranger had to run a half mile to get to the beach because his car wasn't made to handle the terrain. When he arrived, he wasn't able to get to them because of the high surf, she said.
Rescuers eventually retrieved the mother's body and the father's body washed up.
The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter and two motor life boats to search for the teenager, but the aerial search was suspended Saturday evening by thick coastal fog.
A call seeking the status of the Coast Guard's search on Sunday wasn't immediately returned.
The dog got out of the water on its own, Jones said.

Sad but why would you go in the ocean during winter? Im sure they died from hypothermia and that made them drown.

Hello world on psvita ofw 2.00
21/11/2012 10:14 AM Posted by: voyager9 in PSP News
Quote:Developer Frostegater already has a working pspemu kernel exploit, on the latest Vita 2.0 official firmware update (this was first announced by TheZ yesterday, and Wololo got confirmation directly from Frostegater today). This proves that Sony hasn’t patched all vectors to run eCFW, and means that there is a future for more exploit releases especially for those who have updated. Frostgater is already hard at work at trying to port TN-C to this new kernel exploit.

Hoho seems legit
