Couple dead, teen missing after family swept to sea trying to save dog
Quote:A couple died and their 16-year-old son went missing after being swept into sea in Northern California while trying to save their dog, authorities said Sunday.
The family was at Big Lagoon, a beach north of Eureka, Saturday afternoon when the dog chased after a thrown stick and got pulled into the ocean by eight to ten foot waves, said Dana Jones, a state Parks and Recreation district superintendent.
Jones said the boy went after the dog, prompting his father to go after them. She said the teenager was able to get out, but when he didn't see his father, he and his mother went into the water looking for him.
"Both were dragged into the ocean," Jones said.
The Times-Standard reports the couple's daughter called police.
Jones said a park ranger had to run a half mile to get to the beach because his car wasn't made to handle the terrain. When he arrived, he wasn't able to get to them because of the high surf, she said.
Rescuers eventually retrieved the mother's body and the father's body washed up.
The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter and two motor life boats to search for the teenager, but the aerial search was suspended Saturday evening by thick coastal fog.
A call seeking the status of the Coast Guard's search on Sunday wasn't immediately returned.
The dog got out of the water on its own, Jones said.

Sad but why would you go in the ocean during winter? Im sure they died from hypothermia and that made them drown.

Try finding this article from some other sources, Fox News is often very untruthful and over exaggerated in the end. They never seem give a full conclusion to their cases and most of their knowledge contradicts other news networks.
"If you see a person jumping down the street, you can tell his preferences by shooting at the guy. If he starts whining, he plays Counter-Strike. If he charges you wielding an axe, you just interrupted a Morrowind player buffing his Acrobatics."

Jumping into freezing water after a dog... Natural selection at it's best.

To some people their dog is just as important as any other member of their family...
How and who you choose to risk your life for shouldn't be left to the judgement of anyone except the person whose life it is to risk...

Could that dog have grown up to discover a new method of inter planet transfer? Nope.
Could the teenage? Yep. (Well, probably not, since the dog was the smarter one to actually survive)
Let's see which one is more important... Hmmm...
Don't get me wrong, I love my dog. But as you said, it's up to her to risk her life. If she's dump enough to jump into the ocean after a stick, she's on her own.

I wouldn't necessarily call this natural selection. If they went in for say, a cell phone, or something easily replaceable, then yeah. Intelligence does not merit an organism's worth. A tree will never grow up to discover some celestial body, so should wee do away with them all because you deem them unintelligent? What if it were a severely autistic child that had fallen in? Should they have just not cared?

If the story is true, I'd still think twice before jumping into an ocean like that.
Actually, even if you had a very good chance of surviving, what's the odds of actually being able to rescue someone else?
