Okay.
Well, I'm buring Xubuntu to a disc now, hopefully will have it installed soon too.
I may try some of the things you guys said too, just after I try out this.

Well once you have the base ubuntu system on if you want to try another desktop from the terminal you can just type

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

That's for the full kubuntu preconfigured KDE

Code:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

That's for the full ubuntu preconfigured gnome

Either of which are far, far better than xfce.

Okay, so I have a question about the installation.
I burnt the ISO to a disc and inserted in my CD drive, then rebooted.
A bunch of text keeps going down the page, and then it shows a little window with 4 commands. Then it waits for input. What do I do?

if you have the dr-dos prompt you have burnt the disk wrong, just burn the iso as normal, there is no need to set it as bootable, the image already is.

So I burned it to a disc, and a got a screen like this:

You start the program, that's the livecd so it will boot into the desktop and once loaded there will be a icon to start the install, if you are dual-booting you should free up some space for the partition first using a tool like partiton magic. You could use the built in partition manager tools in the install but they can be a bit "twitchy"

Alternatively you could install parted magic, a liveCD enviroment you can use to completely control your partition setup, just grab the windows executable install, then reboot into parted magic

Okay then, I have space for the partition, just got to find the program now.

So, I click on "Start or Install XUbuntu" (first option) then it loads desktop, and there is any icon that says "Install Xubuntu."

By the way, how long does it usually take to load up the desktop?

edit: And how do you know what partition you are installing it on? Does it give you a choice?

Of course it gives you a choice, and it wil vary alot as to how long it takes to boot the liveCD's depending on your hardware. I never get the liveCD releases.

Indeed I never download the discs.

Okay then. Because when I tried it the first time, it probably took at least 2-5min for the CD to book, and even then it wasn't finish since I was not sure.

Anyways, gonna make the partition and maybe try to install.

How long do you think it might take for a 400mhz, 198mb ram computer to install? And does it need the internet?

^it won't really run that great on specs like

on ur current specs itll take pretty long
(i couldnt get ubuntu running the live cd session on my old pc with similar specs as you)

u need atleast 256 MB RAM and a 800 MHZ CPU atleast to get the live cd running,

i personally recomend 512 ram and 1 ghz+ CPU for the live cd and also the Actual OS when installed

otherwise run XFCE (xbuntu), its designed to run on low end pc's

or you can try to install it using the alternative install iso, but even then the actual os won't run great on ur specs

and no the install does not need internet as far as im concerned
(unless on the live cd u wanted to check out firefox, etc)

Threaded Mode \| Linear Mode this linux distro no need for RS/MU links
