They still exist O_O I haven't seen one in my house for at least 6 years. Even my cottage doesn't have one.

The TV industry was heavily against VCRs when they first came out.  Fortunately for us, they aren't illegal.
However, recorders that come with automatic ad stripping technology have been under legal fire recently - I don't know what the outcome of these are though.
I do recall a bit of legal struggles a few years back with the LogoAway filter (which was designed to remove watermarks from videos).

RE: Downloading a TV Show
Loadsa stuff you wouldn't think is illegal, actually is.

A radio is for personal use. If I tune in to Classic Rock FM, crank up the volume, and allow my entire street to hear it, that's technically illegal for:

a) me - I don't have a license to "distribute" it

and

b) the listeners in the street - they haven't paid to hear it.

The above example is not something I do (I don't listen to the radio), but is a good way of showing what a bunch of bollocks this sort of subject is.

Or how about this one, but I'm going away from the pirating topic for a moment (the main point here is about making money, which is what the heave-ho over piracy is). Developing a virus to do something malicious (ie, 'borrow' bank details from a computer) is illegal, but without them, there would be no need for companies to make anti-virus software. No virus' - no money-making anti-virus.

Or even more simple: No crime - no police (it would put millions of coppers out of a job)

And how about most of us here, owning a hacked PSP. Do any of us really care what Sony think about us, exploiting their console and games. Not really.

I have a massive DVD and CD collection, but in all honesty, I haven't paid for a film, tv series, or album for quite some time. MEH

Rant over.
