RE: [Blog] New Computer (v2)
Ok Windows 8 is making me rage.  I'm probably using it incorrectly/inefficiently, need to go find myself a guide or something.

Also, fuck you whatever review site I went to that said my memory is 11-11-11-30 @ 1.65V when it's actually 11-11-11-27 @ 1.5V.  Wasted 3 hrs wondering why my system crashes 2 minutes into Prime95 even when not overclocked.  Lucky I didn't burn the bloody memory.

1.5V is standard for DDR3 sticks.
Yeah you're really lucky there.

And Windows 8 doesn't seem to have particularly good reception.  Though if you're able to get rid of the Metro stuff (there's probably ways to do this), it should be very similar to Windows 7.

RE: [Blog] New Computer (v2)
if i get a new system, I'll probably give windows 8 an honest try, but most likely downgrade rather quickly.

RE: [Blog] New Computer (v2)
For those wondering about boot times Windows 8 changed how they do it compared to their other OS

Quote: Boot-up times

Wee've already talked a bit about Windows 8's improved boot time, which takes advantage of Windows' hibernation technology to save core OS processes to disk as they're unloaded from memory, rather than purging them completely and then loading the OS from scratch at next boot. Our main test system, which has a fast quad-core processor and SSD, certainly benefits from this improvement. But it's even better on low-end systems.

That's why windows 8 boots so fast combined with a SSD.

Now if assasinator has windows 8 installed with the BIOS set to UEFI its even faster.
Don forget the OS natively supports Sata 6 and USB 3 which is a boost.

Also how new the chipset is gets taken into account.

For example Boogs you have a crucal M4 and takes you 30 seconds to boot to Win 7.

Im using a 5mm laptop hdd with a 20gb sata 2 msata SSD with the new chipset like assasinator has.
Using Diskeepers Expresscache software which caches everything to msata drive includng some boot files.
This ssd is vastly slower than yours and i get a 23 second boot time.

On windows 8 using UEFI i get 10-11 seconds boot. Mainly because how UEFI works combined with windows 8.

So technically assasinator is cheating :p

RE: [Blog] New Computer (v2)
right 14 seconds boot time i have managed with windows 8 on this laptop without a ssd and using an msata ssd for cache.

could probably be faster after a poo poo ton of reboots to initialize it.

Sup guys I'm going to buy an LG Optimus 4x HD for $339.

Because Apple is totally ripoff, and Samsung Galaxy S3 is $150 more for not that many more benefits.

Bootloader is still locked on the 4x HD so no custom roms at all. Been locked since release so like half a year.

Im getting an S2 for really cheap (same price i paid for preowned atrix 4g)

So finally Jellybean

Also after my ssd cache fully initialized my boot time to desktop is 8 seconds

Nexus 4: comparable price, better phone, but no SD slot
S3: probably overpriced, looks like you just missed a special: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/92130

Also consider bundled plans.

Nexus 4 is like $500 in Australia.  I'm going to pay $500 for that, I may as well go all the way and pay $620 for a Galaxy Note 2.

Those are generally only good for heavy users.  I only make like 1-2 calls a week on average on mobile phone (I make most of my calls on land line if possible, because it's cheaper), there's no way to justify a bundled plan for me.  I'm just going to find myself some $10/month plan or something.

Also I can get a Lumia 900 for around $300, shame it's screen is shitty (480x800 for 4.3'', 217 ppi).  Is Windows for phone better or Android better?

Then don't get it from Australia.  I recall it being $400 when it was first released - possibly cheaper now.
You do realise that Kogan isn't exactly Australian right?  They only do grey imports.

I heard Windows isn't that bad, it's just Android has way more applications for it.  There's also probably more customisability with all the custom ROMs around (assuming you can install custom stuff on your phone).
