I've heard that Steam actually isn't as bad as it used to be a few years back.
Personally haven't verified myself, as I've been scarred enough by the last time I tried Steam to not want to try it again.

Steam isn't as bad it was before but the whole whether you actually own your games issue is still brought up a lot these days. 

At least with hard copies you know that the game is yours and you can do whatever you want with it so

I thought wee paid them so that they could have the bandwidth. It's not like bandwidth is that expensive anyway.
They could've distributed it as torrent anyway - nothing stopping that.
