Do not hack the Vita.
Hacking the Vita to poo poo would be its final nail in it's coffin.

Do you actually want the Vita to be a success? Then don't hack it, giving the people the method to pirate games, and buy games for it.
The reason the PSP sucks so much in the West is because so many people hacked it, and as a result bought no games for it.

Also extracting a firmware file does not constitute finding any glitches, so i doubt this will lead anywhere.

The Nintendo DS was so damn easy to hack its stupid, yet it was huge in the US.  What killed the PSP was a lack of decent games.

RE: PS VITA Firmware xTractor
yeah but you had to buy something to hack it
which obviously had an effect.
the PSP just go online and bam you have all you need.

RE: PS VITA Firmware xTractor
I kinda agree with GlaG (welcome back by the way!^^) I can only tell what I noticed way back when the PSP was only just released for a bit: I went to two schools over the course of the PSPs prime-time and in both the situation regarding the PSP was rather clear, people were interested in hacking it not really to pirate PSP games, that was just a factor at the beginning they downloaded a few games and mostly deleted them swiftly after ten minutes because they didn't like them. The only games I ever saw having a appeal with people were games like Burnout, FIFA, PES and Ridge Racer.

Another thing, people actually disliked taking their PSP anywhere outside of home for various reasons, mostly because of the size and how easy the PSP 1000 broke when dropped plus it was kinda a likely thing to be 'borrowed' in schools. Some of the things were fixed with the PSP Slim but even then when I compare it to my old GBA SP/DS Lite (the orignal DS was poo poo for that as well) I still couldn't just fit it easily in a pocket :/

So if people don't took it outside, what did they do with it? The first years the line-up was quite similar to the PS2 which on the one hand is great because the PS2 had many nice games but on the other hand, if I have a PS2 with, lets say PES at home, I guess most people play the PS2 version then >.<

And the majority of people I helped hacking their PSPs at school later on were much more interested in pirating PSX/SNES/N64 games on their PSP simply because what got stuck in peoples minds was "PSP games suck" Like Sensei said, looking back it rather had a decent line-up of games but by the time that happened people already largely lost interest.

So yeah I don't think piracy was one of the main reasons the PSP didn't do well, it was one of the reasons but in my opinion not the main reason. Like GlaG said, DSs are even easier to pirate, yeah you have to buy something but there was a time where cheap DS knock-off cards were sold here everywhere for 20-30 that worked rather well until the copy protected games came which required more sophisticated flashcards. And even then, it was just pop-in and play while there's always a chance for bricked PSPs when you try to hack it.

But like said, that's only what I saw here around my town, it could very well be that it was different in other parts of the world^^

I for my part don't care much if the Vita gets hacked or not, the games seem nice and interesting this time around (though wee still get a fair share of "similar to PS3" games again >.<) so wee will see, I think the Vita will do well even if hacked^^

Mmm...
I think the psp should be hacked.
But after a while!
So you have a chance to play old games, including:
Various Final fantasy
Queen's blade
Disgaea
Etc
So the Sony has the time to make money ...
Wee may have the opportunity to develop an emulator of ps2 or i don't know what (With all that power of Vita)...
And so have all the possible gains from pspvita...for us..and for sony.
At the beginning Sony make money with game and other stuff inside the psn.
With the mod Sony KNOWS that he can earn money with the console itself, which will be more marketable, and with the accessories....obliviusly earns less money with the game.
But I'm repeat..needs to be drained a bit of time.
(srry 4 the english...i hope i was clear =P )

Besides, now that they know that people can 'extract' the firmware, Sony's going to make a 'security update'. Then again. maybe this isn't real.

RE: PS VITA Firmware xTractor
This is why I'm buying two of these f*ckers, one to keep up to date and one to keep on the out-of-the-box firmware for future modding possibilities.  Selling two of mah PSP's to fund the second one.
Yeah, I'm more than likely wasting a huge chunk of cash, but whatever.  I have 4 of these suckers, why do I need them?

RE: PS VITA Firmware xTractor
PSP and DS were both hacked to spoon. The difference in sales had to do with the markets they tapped - PSP was a more "adult" handheld, it cost more, was more fragile. The DS won because Nintendo successfully made it appealing to parents and kids with a lower price point, greater durability, and of course first party games. Make the system appealing to a greater number of people and third party support follows, always has. Vita was announced at $250 and Nintendo immediately slighted 3DS early adopters with a price slash and an inevitable second joystick, just to keep up. Thanks for the 20 free games *roll eyes*

Looking forward to the Vita being cracked wide open.

Just like how successful the PC platform is?
What about the iPod/iPhone/iPad and how much they've been jailbroken?

Don't get brainwashed by studios that piracy destroys a market.  It has been shown by a number of studies that it doesn't, and in many cases has a reverse effect.
A game/console fails because it's poo poo in some way (even if it's marketing), not because of piracy.

Anyway, one's individual decision has very little impact on the success of a console.  Unless you're in a position of power or have great influence, it's best to accept that following your own morals probably get you nowhere (but personal satisfaction perhaps).
