personally i am of the opinion that guitar is something that one should struggle through teaching themselves, not be taught. it makes the difference between someone who has a feel for the instrument and someone who can play exactly what they were taught, with little to no creativity involved. if a thousands of people suddenly become "decent" using something like this, it means that rock will become even more flooded with the same stuff, as opposed to getting any of the innovation that has kept it a constantly evolving art form over the years.

Like what's already been said though - there's a difference between playing an instrument well and composing a good song.

In my opinion, the guitar can be played in a very meaningful, soulful way.. a very personal way. Many instruments can.

I'm no player but I've heard enough players of the guitar to tell the difference (and I'm sure you can too) between someone who means it, and someone who can do it because they can.
