in the days of 98 (my god im sounding like an old man) if you messed up badly like this (or if a bad program messed something up) you would be talking about a complete reinstall. restore points take up a lot of space but they can save a lot of work from being lost in most cases.

I remember windows 3.11 which had to be installed on top of DOS 6.22,

well don't - i didnt want ta say but i also remember those times (the speccy is where i started :s). :P am i glad wee don't have to have an operating system installed from multiple floppy disks any more lol.
i still remember the old dos commands to make games like dark forces and duke3d run. (himem etc.) heh the good ole days. :P
anyway enough of this old poo poo, it just depresses everyone. :)

Lol.  I generally disable system restore - I don't like it...

Funny how explorer comes up then disappears though.  Probably some virus you installed or something...

virus or data corruption i would say. i wouldnt disable system restore - it has saved my bacon a few times, however i don't think this will help in this case. well worth the few gig of space to save your data i think. i guess its up to the individual to decide whether its worth the space or not - i did once decide not to use it and lost data because it was off so to me it is usefull.
