RE: What is the best choice..
I think _all_ commercial Intel and AMD CPUs are now 64 bit (maybe some low-end ones may not be, IDK).
I don't know how fast 64 bit increases performance over 32 bit computer, in reality that is. Quad core compared to dual core gives a ~60%-70% If I recall correctly increase in speed (no, it's not 100%).
I'm actually planning on moving to Windows XP x64 - most apps seems to work on it (I'm still trying to get my TV Tuner to work, I did get it working once, but for some reason, I can't get it to work anymore). All 32 bit apps that don't really perform anything "big" will work due to "32 bit emulation" (it's not really that).
There's 64 bit versions of most apps you should need. I'm currently trying to find a decent RAMDisk for XP64 (none are free, it seems).

RE: What is the best choice..
I don't like Vista. The only point there really is, if you ask me, is DX10. Otherwise, XP For the win.
In fact, XP 64, since it's based off Windows Server 2003, would actually be a lot more stable than Vista.
But if Vista's looks are a must...

RE: What is the best choice..
I love xp x64....64-bit all the way!
It may just be my imagination, but I DO notice a difference with 64-bit native apps and loading times vs. 32-bit. I noticed it enough to switch back to x64 after trying 32-bit for awhile.

RE: What is the best choice..
Ooh, just managed to get the TV Tuner to work - took quite a bit of fiddling. Generally, running the installer should be suffice, but I had to fiddle and try to obtain the .sys files and fiddle around with other poo poo. Oh well, working awesome now :)
Just need to find a damned good RamDisk... >_>
