So how's the 3DS so far?
When it was announced, I was suspicious of the 3D gimmick being put in driving any success.
And it seems that the general consumer base seems to somewhat agree:
Quote:Nintendo was caught unawares by surprisingly slow sales of the 3DS, the company said Tuesday.
“Nintendo 3DS has not been selling as expected since the second week [of availability in the United States and Europe], and this is not just in the Japanese market but also in the United States and Europe, where no direct impact from the great earthquake has occurred,” Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said during an investor briefing in Tokyo. “Therefore, wee recognize that wee are in a situation where wee need to step up our efforts to further promote the spread of Nintendo 3DS.”

Nintendo's chief says that people simply don't get the 3DS
Quote:While Iwata did not give specific reasons why the console hasn't done as well as Nintendo had predicted, he voiced a few hypotheses. One is that consumers have yet to fully understand the console's capabilities, even when trying it out.
"The value of 3D images without the need for special glasses is hard to be understood through the existing media. However, wee have found that people cannot feel it just by trying out a device, rather, some might even misestimate it when experiencing the images in an improper fashion," Iwata said.
He also said Nintendo had to enhance the contents which can be enjoyed passively by non-active users -- by which he means the non 3D part of the console. He also said certain features for the 3DS - StreetPass, SpotPass, Augmented Reality and Mii Maker -- weren't being fully appreciated by the consumers.
"It is now clear that the combination of these new features is not necessarily easy-to-understand by just saying one word to those without experience," Itawa said.

From what I've heard around the place, seems that many people aren't terribly a big fan of the 3D effect. The other main thing is the lack of release titles.
Price is perhaps one other factor. The 3DS is now the most expensive handheld console at the moment, compared to the DSi/PSP which is possibly around half the price.
After having been out for a month now, what do you feel about the future of the 3DS? Will some new games turn it around?

RE: So how's the 3DS so far?
The big bummer is,.. the 3d effect is in the back of the screen,. and not coming at you,. out of the front,.(like with glasses) so its pretty lame 3d effect IMO,. that leaves you with 1 screen,..

RE: So how's the 3DS so far?
the biggest factor is the lack of good titles for 3DS, so still some are still stick to NDSiXL (which now lowered the price, and some NDS Lite are now being lowered because it is now been stopped to produce), and still some prefer cheaper NDS rather than this, but who knows after E3 wee may found something good
maybe wee can expect to 3DS boom sale around June since that time they will release A+ titles (Ocarina of Time, Resident Evil Mercenaries)
but yeah some do not fond of 3D effect, but i still love my 3DS so far (im finishing shadow wars which is a better tactical rpg for today since its base in Xcom gameplay)
and by the way, i think Nintendo only lost around 100000+ nintendo sales forecast
@V1
ive seen in the 3D movies (which i mostly do watch no in the big screen now a days) that they do also use depths rather than pop outs, as some says that depths do less eye strains that pop out 3D effect

RE: So how's the 3DS so far?
i played on one at iseries 42 (gaming event) and i couldn't honestly see what all the hype was about, the 3d effect was interesting at a push, but it didn't have the wow factor for me.

Same here. If there were a reasonable amount of A+ games like krystabegnalie said then maybe it would be enough of a push.

RE: So how's the 3DS so far?
for all i know, some tittles are interesting, for example kagura portrait of girls, Love Plus 3D, and some puzzle things.
but regardless, i won't get one until sequel of Phoenix Wright, Ghost Tricks, Jump ultimate stars, etc is out for it (which seriously, most of em can be done better on any other console)
I'm tired of mario and pokemon. (that said, i haven't tried Black and white yet. may be i should)
