O is known as an ok, X is like NO

But as said in that thingy I posted...

The colors are backwards... blue being yes is used for X and red being no is used on O

So people over here refer to the colors rather than the shapes... it would seem. :/

X is usually seen as "wrong" or incorrect in Japan I think (eg, get a question wrong).
Whereas O is like a tick over there I think.

^ I don't think you're going to have a button to represent every single function.  Although symbolising documentation, square itself can be quite abstract in meaning.
