Protip: not buying an overpriced Apple desktop also lessens the likelihood of it being 'borrowed'.

Also, don't be an idiot and make two backups sticking them right next to each other. At the very least, take the effort to move one of them somewhere, even if it's into a cupboard. So that if your computer explodes, there's less chance of it destroying your second copy.

Otherwise, this guy got really lucky.

It's not really the skill of the hacker (well, it is.... but), more than that, the incompetence of the thief.

Seriously, as if you would 'borrow' a computer and not do anything about the existing OS and poo poo installed on it. Especially because "he can't install new software because he doesn't have the admin password", lololol.

Backup reformat reinstall, that's the way.

Also, he's way too paranoid, I mean, 3 layers of locks, and daily dual backups?

And searching ebay, and craigslist, for months, lol.
