Sony: OtherOS was provided under license not ownership
Sony has offered insight into their defence against the various OtherOS removal lawsuits. Sony claims that OtherOS is provided to PS3 owners under license and not total ownership. Within this contract, Sony clearly states that it can disable features by issuing firmware updates if they wish.
Here's what Sony had to say to IGN,
Quote:These contracts specifically provide PS3 purchasers with a license, not an ownership interest, in the software and in the use of the PSN, and provide that SCEA has the right to disable or alter software features or terminate or limit access to the PSN, including by issuing firmware updates. Plaintiffs therefore cannot succeed in any of their claims because SCEA's alleged alteration/disablement of PS3 features including the Other OS, was entirely proper and authorized.

Well sony is a company, they need to start getting used to that if you like to pull the customers leg = loss of customers and future buyers.
They're cocky, but lets hope it doesn't get them in the future.

Microsoft sells windows under a license, does that give Microsoft right to say "OK no more windows for anyone"?

RE: Sony: OtherOS was provided under license not ownership
They can do that (not support Windows), and they do indeed do it for older versions.
Of course, they can't physically remove it from your machine, just like Sony doesn't physically remove the older firmware - you have to give them permission to.
Basically, MS no longer produces software for Windows 9x, just like Sony will no longer produce stuff for older firmware. I'm sure MS have removed stuff in Windows 9x since now. You can keep using the old version if you want, though you won't get support most likely...
