Sony has offered insight into their defence against the various OtherOS removal lawsuits. Sony claims that OtherOS is provided to PS3 owners under license and not total ownership. Within this contract, Sony clearly states that it can disable features by issuing firmware updates if they wish.

Here's what Sony had to say to IGN,
Quote:These contracts specifically provide PS3 purchasers with a license, not an ownership interest, in the software and in the use of the PSN, and provide that SCEA has the right to disable or alter software features or terminate or limit access to the PSN, including by issuing firmware updates. Plaintiffs therefore cannot succeed in any of their claims because SCEA's alleged alteration/disablement of PS3 features including the Other OS, was entirely proper and authorized.

Sony that is bullchocolate!
this is why disclaimers are painfully long, whatevs. they deserve to have their spoon hacked if they want to be all assholish like they are.
Well. That explains why they won all of the court cases.
all this sony hate isn't good for sony.
sony does't understand,.. Hmmm owners don't want there PS3 being ripped of feature's,...... comprende sony?!
Well sony is a company, they need to start getting used to that if you like to pull the customers leg = loss of customers and future buyers.

They're cocky, but lets hope it doesn't get them in the future.

Quoted for truth... Sony is just openly saying "Yeah, wee can disable your PS3s features however wee want to and you can do jack spoon about it."
Microsoft sells windows under a license, does that give Microsoft right to say "OK no more windows for anyone"?
They can do that (not support Windows), and they do indeed do it for older versions.
Of course, they can't physically remove it from your machine, just like Sony doesn't physically remove the older firmware - you have to give them permission to.
Basically, MS no longer produces software for Windows 9x, just like Sony will no longer produce stuff for older firmware.  I'm sure MS have removed stuff in Windows 9x since now.  You can keep using the old version if you want, though you won't get support most likely...
