Quote:April 15, 2010 (Cypress, CA) – Bandai Entertainment Inc. announced today that it has acquired the North American distribution rights for the theatrical film The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya from Kadokawa Pictures Inc.

The film, which is based on the novel of the same name by Nagaru Tanigawa and Noizi Ito, was made by Kyoto Animation and supervised by Chief Director Tatsuya Ishihara and Director Yasuhiro Takemoto. The story follows the two seasons of the anime series phenomenon The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and tells the story of Haruhi's sudden disappearance and her friend Kyon's attempt to untangle the mystery of why she's vanished. The film opened on February 6th, 2010 in Japan with 24 prints, and earned more than 670 Million Yen (Approximately $7.5 Million US) by the end of March.

An English subtitled print of the film will be shown theatrically at the Viz Cinema in San Francisco (http://www.vizcinema.com) staring on May 21st followed by a theatrical distribution in Hawaii in mid-June by Consolidated Theaters (http://www.consolidatedtheatres.com) and Artisan Gateway as part of their SPOTLIGHT ASIA FILMS Program. Hawaii dates and venues will be announced soon.

Subsequently, an English language version of the movie will be produced by Bandai Entertainment and Bang Zoom! Entertainment and released on DVD at a date soon to be determined.

It's Bandai... and they are unpredictable and slow on the Blu-ray uptake [no mention of it for this movie, nor the Gurren Lagann movies].

But a release is better than none. I wonder who'll distribute it to the UK and if there will be European screenings... unlikely as they are v___v

And no mention of when the DVD/Blu-ray will hit Japan either.

As if this wasn't enough magnificent news - Haruhi is coming to Bluray! Confused? I thought you might be - but actually both the release dates for the combined two seasons limited boxset and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya film have been announced!!

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Blu-ray Complete BOX [Limited Edition] will be available for 36000yen ($450) and no news on a standard version. This will be "including all 28 episodes of the TV series rearranged in chronological order. Also includes two event footage of "The Extravaganza of Haruhi Suzumiya" and "The Symphony of Haruhi Suzumiya" and more bonus video footage." It will (surprisingsly) have both Japanese and English audio tracks - however it won't be 5.1 - it'll be stereo instead. It will be released on the 26th of November.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya [Limited Edition] [Blu-ray] will be going for 9000yen ($106) and the standard version [Blu-ray] for 8000yen and they will be landing on the 18th of December - just in time for Christmas.

The limited edition "includes a bonus video featuring footages of location hunting, BGM recording, press conference, edit works, "Yasashi Bokyaku" music video making-of. Also includes jacket illustration slide tray with clear sleeve, description shit with postcard and movie brochure. The Blu-ray edition also includes script." It has a 5.1 surround audio track in Japanese only.

If you're wondering about English Subtitles - don't count on it because Bandai Visual have already licensed both of them - but don't take my word for it, anything is possible!
