Faster to upload and more reliable.
Cause it isn't really faster and it uses my bandwidth + additional server load from serving the file.

Is it me, or do all the popular image hosting sites just suck right now?

Tinypic and Imageshack are just fine for me.

Imageshack have an annoying Flash uploader that doesn't work well if you don't have Flash.  Historically, they've also been unreliable, sometimes with image links going dead for no reason...
Tinypic was what I used to use, then they introduced captchas, which are annoying if you have images disabled.  It seems they've removed that now, though they're ads are still annoying (if you don't have Adblock) - might try them again.
Kimag.es do some ghey referrer check now.

Drag and drop into FTP client, then right click, copy path?  Can't think of anything easier.

I'm sure your server can handle the bandwidth of an image just fine (after all, you have much much bigger stuff in the download section).  And it's not like this is 4chin SUCK, the image won't get 10000 hits.

And another important thing is, you retain ultimate control of the file, so you can modify and/or delete it at will.

I've never had an imageshack image go dead on me Hmmm

and i just use imageshack uploader, drag and drop, set resize settings (if required) and bam.

the uploader doesn't even require an account.

But you need to:
- launch (S)FTP application
- connect to server
- navigate to correct folder
- upload file
- copy path + filename, then modify for actual URL

Whereas, for image host:
- Ctrl+T, type URL
- click Browse
- select file, and upload
- copy URL

Or if ImageBot works, click the icon and drag and drop files onto it.

It's got nothing to do with being able to handle something.  If it consumes bandwidth, it consumes bandwidth, nothing more, nothing less.  If I can save it with minimal effort, why not?
And if you're wrong, then changing things over isn't exactly easy, whereas hosting externally, I eliminate all risks with self-hosting.  (only thing I need to worry about is them potentially deleting files)

Don't need it.

Maybe I'll try the ImageShack uploader.  Thanks for the tip.

Well, depends on how your ftp client is set up.

- My default folder on the home side is the folder where I usually save my screenshots to.  So more often than not, it's simply dragging from the left to the right.  No need to actually browse anywhere.
- Just set up the client up so that right click + copy link gets the full correct link, ready to use.

The real benefit is if you have multiple files, it can be done all at once (yes, even the copy link).

A risk based least cost strategy?  I see those economics and finance lessons you took didn't go to waste.

Jokes aside, do you even come close to using up your monthly cap?  I'm under the (possibly very incorrect) impression that you don't even come close to that.  So it's pretty much a forgone cost anyway.

RE: Post Your Imitation Brands!
Multiuploading, I might use it, though stuff like ImageBot handle it fine anyway.
S/FTP doesn't necessarily have any relationship with HTTP, so you can't copy full URLs from an FTP client (unless it's something special).
Most of the time, I'm uploading only one image anyway.

And yes, I have gone close to monthly limit.  And it's not a forgone cost, because of the potential of going close in the future.

I just set the client to use a custom path (ie. http://zingaburga.com/assassinator/), instead of whatever other bullshit it uses (sftp://hurr/durr/hurrdurr/zingaburga.com/herp/derp/derpderp/).  So that should always be correct.
