Secret Questions
Find them stupid much?
I dunno why so many sites have them. I guess it was a good idea for some, but I go eek every time some site asks me for one.
To me, it seems a secret question is probably less secure than a password. I mean, if you're relying on secret questions to prove that someone is allowed to log in, why are there passwords?
What's even more irritating, is that most sites which ask a secret question often restrict the questions that can be asked.
Personally, I just enter random junk as the answer whenever I have to fill one out.
What do you guys think?

RE: Secret Questions
The questions are pretty redundant because only a complete idiot would make their password the name of their pet.

RE: Secret Questions
What kind of sites anyway?
I don't remember any sites forcing it on you... I mean whenever I've seen it, it's always optional (and I just don't do it).
And I guess if I'm forced to, then I'll just enter my password (slightly altered again) as the secret question. Since the way I structure my password it's impossible to forget (base always the same, slight altered for each site, based on some rule that I can easily and quickly reproduce in the case that I do forget, but is rather hard for someone else to guess. Reasoning being that this way, if I get 1 password hacked/keylogged/whatever out of me, I don't instantly loose everything else).

RE: Secret Questions
You would NEVER get emailed asking for your password by a genuine legitimate source. Not directly at least, at most they would tell you to come to the local branch/office/website/whatever to change passwords (and even that should pretty much never happen).
Unless it's your friend emailing you wanting your password or something... but would you really give your friend your password? I sure as hell won't (and if the request seems strange, it's very likely not your friend, but a hacker/bot instead).

He's referring to sites where you can recover your password through email (ie the "I forgot my password" link).
I've seen a few sites do this, mostly more corporate or government related, from memory, and some email services (since you probably can't recover a password through email).

Ok, fair enough.
But that would never happen to me... but then you would just need to make your password hard to forget.
