I personally find it's the "starting to study" bit that's hard.  Often I'm just like "urgghhhh.... I really really don't feel like doing any stats" and end up sleeping or wasting time on games.  Once I manage to get studying, I can go for ages, and my productivity is generally pretty good (I get stuff done pretty quickly.  My sister sits there for 4hrs and gets like nothing done).

Yr 7/8/9 maths is a joke here.  I used to just sit there and talk to people all day, and the teacher would get pissed at me all the time, but I still 100% 1/2 of the tests.

There was this one time, one of the other guys in class was either talking or playing cards or something in class and still continued when the teacher told him to stop, and the teacher got way pissed off at him, and said something along the lines of "if you don't get at least a 90 in the next test, I'm going to drop you to level 2" (3 levels of maths).  So he crammed some before the test, and perfect 100'd it.  And he went to the teacher and said "hey remember back then? ... I got 100".  It was like funny as hell.

Think of it comparatively, rather than on absolute terms.  You don't need to beat the test (score close to 100), you just need to beat the people.

Later year stats exams completely rape people here.  People get average scores of like 50, and dumb people don't do actuarial at uni, so everyone is a smart kid who did very well earlier on in school.  Everything always ends up getting scaled up.

Do that too.  Even if you completely keep up with a subject, you still need to cram a bit at the end.  No way you can clearly remember stuff from 10 weeks ago like it was yesterday.

Well, i don't know if you like being compared to me, but this is exactly how i act. I once stayed with my physics teacher from the end of school (2:44PM) till (8:00PM). It was funny, i worked for 5 hours straight, but he stayed for a long time as well; which was surprising.

If you get me hooked on something, i will do everything i can to get it done, but this can be detrimental if it's something that's totally worthless.

This reminds me of my counsellor telling me that i won't get into a college with my marks (colleges are looked down upon in Canada, they're basically the worst places to go for education). I came back 6 months later and i totally made her change her mind.

Everyone did either worse than i did or got the same mark, but like you said; i aim for 100% not some inferior number telling me i didn't know all the spoon i needed to know. Also, there was this one girl who did pretty well; and I'm sure i didn't survey the entire class (it's SUCH a douchebag move to ask for what people got on their tests, i never look towards beating people to make me _feel_ better), so there could be others as well. But yes, i do understand scaling; i had that for my IB courses, but I'm never content with myself if i didn't achieve my goal (which is 100% every test); i never achieve it, but it never hurts to aim high eh?

Agreed, maths is the foundation of our world and future; nothing is based on what people just say to each other. Wee evolve through numbers, if you don't think so; just look at any technology related course that has something in advancing humanity; you'll find numbers, be it biology, physics, or chemistry.

I find aiming for these things to be really bad "bang for your buck".  Often here, the lecturer make at least some of these questions extremely difficult just so that noone, or only the very very best can get it.

To get these questions, it would require significantly more study effort.

Lets say this is an extremely difficult test and...

It would take you 15hrs of effort to get a score of 30
It would take you 50hrs of effort to get a score of 50 (average score)
It would take you 100hrs of effort to get a score of 70
It would take you 200hrs of effort to get a score of 85
It would take you 500hrs of effort to get a score of 100

Your score/time efficiency for your first 15hrs is 2
Your score/time efficiency for your next 35hrs is 0.57
Your score/time efficiency for your next 50hrs is 0.4
Your score/time efficiency for your next 100hrs is 0.15
Your score/time efficiency for your next 300hrs is 0.05

You get vastly diminishing returns for your time later on, so I tend not to bother.  No way I'm going to spend even anywhere close to 500hrs in this example.

If getting 100 is really that important to you, then go for it.  But I personally don't care too much about ideals, I care more about efficiency.

You don't know before you start the test if you fail or not>? i had always kinda knew,. (i am not in school anymore ;p)
