So how would this be managed?  Eg, who would make the awards and who would give them out?

The system would automatically give out rewards, but the thing is, what special rewards can be achieved on a forum?
I might be thinking too much like the 360 or PS3 here though while if this was user managed the rewards given out could be more flexible.

i would say it would be like my plaza items.
unlock icons for whatever achievement.

nominate and vote for maybe 10 or 20 depending on how many that can actually happen

mods could give out achievements, like report a post you think is award worthy and they verify.
or other achievements that only mods can give out like for maybe donating so much monies to ep.

post 100 threads in random insanity = award "certified insane"

reach 10,000 post = award "1337 poster"

reach 50+ rep = award "repped hard"

reach 100+ rep = award "repped harder"

refer 10 people = award "Mr.Popular"

just a few ideas that could actually be achieved and automatically noted
