RE: Rec me a music player.
What does the browser do?

Currently Foobar2000 using around 55MB RAM with 25262 tracks in my main playlist.
Foobar2000 does take a while to get used to I think - it's UI is rather different to other players, but once you get used to it, it's quite usable IMO. (am not using any UI extensions)

Depends on your tastes, what what does the browser do again?
Is it like explorer (browsing through folders)?

RE: Rec me a music player.
iTunes for me only uses ~30MB of RAM when running and playing music.

honestly, an argument of how much RAM it uses is kinda pointless, none of us uses the gimmicky features anyway and what is 30MB from our 2 to 6GB of RAM wee have in our PCs? nothing lol

RE: Rec me a music player.
If you have a good sound system or good headphones. So, if you shopped around and spent 200+ USD you should be fine.

Try VLC. It does not look very nice, but the sound quality great. VLC uses it's own libs which are much better.

Not from what I've heard around the place... you're lucky :P
Note that you also need to include the background programs it installs, as well as the kernel mode services.  Why a media player needs all that additional poo poo (in addition to gaining kernel mode access) is beyond me (okay, it probably needs them for DRM/iPod syncing or something I guess).

The older versions weren't terribly good at managing collections - improved in latest version?
Don't see how using its own libraries really matters though - decoders should all give the same result right?

Rythmbox is very nice. You can also try Winamp. If you want soemthing with a pretty UI, try XBMC.
