selling is not sharing!

I got plenty of UMD's and 4 PSP's,. if i like a game i will buy it!

PS3 needs to be hacked too!! i had already got 2 games wich i have't used from day 1.

Mathieulh nevar used devhook<? or played a .iso/.cso>?

Isos were allowed on Devhook or M33 because wee were set on a non restrictive policy, wee wanted to let people the choice to load isos for legit uses because:

1.  UMDs have very bad load times.
2. UMDs are noisy
3. UMDs waiste batteries

Notice that wee never hacked the store so you could copy downloaded games out of it or the like.

If you people want to pirate, it is your responsibility but then don't complain when licencees stop releasing good games on the platform because of it. Of course I am not saying that piracy alone is the cause of the bad psp sales, but it does have its part to do with it (how insignificant it might seem compared to other causes such as second hand market or even bad marketing policies from SCE)

If you think the ps3 needs to be hacked, why won't YOU hack it ? (instead of pointlessly complaining.)

I would like people to have some more sense and see the for and against in here, developers also work to provide games and they also do have families to feed.
I believe that pirates also have their arguments but that does not make piracy right.
I also believe that the games prices are way to high especially in the EU, but there are other means to deal with that issue than to pirate all your games.

Actually only the USA crappy DMCA forbids software reverse engineering but thank you for your concerns. Thankfully I do not live in the USA, I am therefore not liable to this law (which does not apply to countries in the EU).

First of all, welcome to E.P. mathieulh.  It is nice to have such a highly respected dev such as yourself visit our forums  :)

I would like to take a moment to ask you a few questions.

1 - If you guys had such a strong anti piracy stance, but could clearly see the benefits of running games from memory stick, why didn't you implement some sort of protection that would only allow you to rip/play umds if you owned the disc?

2 - Are you guys all done?  If you are I thank you for all you guys did to allow homebrew, and grassroots devs like my to be able to do some developing on the PSP  Madwin    It would be nice if you could give us a little hint, if you guys do got something cooking, even if you don't want to give away too much.

Also, I have 1 more question:  Do you or DAX use any custom themes on your PSP?   If so, what where a few of your favorites?

THANKS FOR READING

1. Because wee believe in a free non restrictive approach and that adding such a protection would have gone against that policy.

2. As far as I am concerned I am done with the psp platform so far (though I happen to stumble to into it again from time to time.) I don't know what Alex wants to do next on psp or if he plans to come back, he officially did not left at least.

3. Not sure about Alex, but as far as I know wee don't use custom themes on our psps. (I am quite satisfied with the official one so far, though I have not been using my psp much lately)

the original theme is ok, but it's plain & dull.
the themes people make are amazing, can't believe that ya'll don't use them.

anyways back on topic piracy is some of the problem, but not all.
piracy exist for everything such as movies, music, software & games, yet they still make money & make good products.
Alot of people still buy games, but most aren't worth buying anymore.
I don't mind buying games if there worth it, but since I got the ps3 I quit buying psp games because I don't ever play it.
Hell if it wasn't for themes my psp would just sit & collect dust.
Piracy is wrong but it's not going anywhere & isn't the cause of the psp's downfall.
I know over 20 people with psp's that aren't hacked & I know some with hacked psp's who still buy games.

although I completely understand why you & Dax are done with the PSP ATM, I wish you would reconsider.
either way I appreciate your work & thanks for everything you've done.

@Shizzy excellent question Madwin I always wondered that myself.

Studies have continually shown that the majority of people who pirate music albums not just buy albums; they but more than most people do. Copyright restrictions and poo poo like MTV kill an artist's chance to become big, but the internet can make them bigger.

And then the greedy record labels take up to 98% of an artist's money, which sometimes amounts to only a few cents an album. I'd rather support a band I like at live concerts, than the record company.

Then again, the record companies are losing something, but not from piracy. They're losing something from not adapting to the digital age.

The question is, how much they buy in proportion to how much they pirate, and you can bet that it'll be a very very small percentage, on average.  Another question is, if they were stopped from pirating, would they buy more or less.

You shouldn't believe every study out there.  Inaccuracies can derive from a lot of areas in such studies.  And depending on the purpose of the creator, they can be crafted in ways that are misleading both to the participants and the viewers (you).

And one of the most basic rules of analysing statistics, relationship does not equate to causation. For example, people in warmer cities tend to have have darker skin color on average, they also eat more ice cream.  You can plot ice cream vs skin color and get a straight line relationship, but does that mean eating ice cream causes you to become black?  Figure that out for yourself (hint: the place is hot).  So these studies are mostly worthless, can you really say piracy causes people to buy more albums?  If you answer no, then piracy is definitely not doing any good for the market but hurting it, and I hope I never meet anyone dumb enough to answer yes.  The situation in your music case would be that most big music lovers both pirate and buy, because they're big music lovers not because piracy makes them buy.  If these pirates were somehow prevented from pirating, they'd probably buy even more CDs.

tl;dr  - Piracy doesn't help the industry.  Never did and never will.

MysterySword Wrote:Copyright restrictions and poo poo like MTV kill an artist's chance to become big, but the internet can make them bigger.

I agree with you on that, the internet capable of making an artist bigger.
