Can you make a separate partition, install on that, then slowly migrate things over?

Resizing a partition may take a while if you haven't actually prepared one before.

In my experience, upgrades don't work terribly well, though they should be fine in the most part I'd say.

if i use another partition for the vista installation.. won't that be in another drive letter and not in "c:" ?

But do you really need to insall vista? What's wrong with xp?

Yes, that would be on another drive letter. What's wrong with not using C:? In fact, I prefer not to install Windows on C:
But on the Vista partition, it will probably end up mapping the drive to C: anyway - it'll appear as something different on your XP partition (and vice versa).
