Thinking of reinstalling Vista due to performance issues
Ok I have never had this many peformance issues with my machine or any machine to be frank but for some reason after my memory slot failed for some weird reason and i had to move all my memory it the remaining 3 slots and i had to buy an extra 2 gb of ram to try and improve the situation nothing has stoped the computer from taking a billion years to start up, log off and shut down and frozen programs that can't be closed by task manager even by killing its process.

If anyone has any tips on how to improve my vista please do because i don't really want to go through the hastle of reinstalling everything. AND Don't SAY INSTALL WINDOWS XP,LINUX OR ANYOTHER O.S

if the memory slot has died, you could have an issue with the mobo. for example, if there are power issues on the board, everything would be running slower (well, everything that manages to load up, some things might not be able to full stop)

RE: Thinking of reinstalling Vista due to performance issues
its electronics.. anything can die suddenly without a reason!

I just finished fully customizing Vista and am now procuring some dreamscene vids. vista works decently on 2 GB RAM, if not completely stunningly. As for your mobo issues, if one of your slot has failed, its good to assume that the other one might fail in due time. But regardless, reset the BIOS settings to default.
Backup ur data on an external drive or a partition you won't be using for OS install and completely wipe the OS drive. use a Boot CD like Hiren's Boot CD or a win, linux os cd to delete the partition and then recreate the partition and then reinstall Vista.

did you check if your mobo was x64 compatible? just because your CPU is doesn't mean your system is.

RE: Thinking of reinstalling Vista due to performance issues
...there are usually about 400 watts running through your computer (with a bad power supply, a good one can go up to 600), and you're telling me you don't see how that could go drastically wrong.

I was also going to say I think mick3y has some problem like this too (except with windows xp) maybe you guys could work together to figure it out.

Are they cheap sticks of ram? Is the ram the problem instead of the computer? I imagine that could also slow things down. Imagine trying to give someone a drink but the moment you put it in their hands they drop it. It would make it a very tedious process.

RE: Thinking of reinstalling Vista due to performance issues
too add to this discussion - putting vista on a system with possible bad ram is a bad move because it will only make a slow as hell operating system even slower AND make it more unstable. i don't know why people hate xp so much because its way faster and easier to use than vista.
things to try to fix the mobo/memory - turn off the mains switch at the wall but leave the pc plugged in then take out the ram sticks and run a very thin screwdriver (jewelers?) along the slots on the motherboard a couple of times - not hard, just enough to scrape gently the pins (dust can gather in there as can oxidisation from the contact between the metals). this trick has worked a couple of times in the past for me, but the majority of times the slot itself or the memory was faulty, however it can't hurt to try it. while your at it give the pins on the ram sticks a little gentle scrape as well - a single scrape will suffice.

Always remember - Google is your friend :)
