RE: New external HDD. Thoughts?
Enclosures are good. Though I only bother with 2.5in (laptop HDD) ones, as they're more portable and don't require external power :P

RE: New external HDD. Thoughts?
I have that one, it's actually pretty good. The only thing that bugs me is its backup software. It's a pain in the donkey to use, so I just drag and drop all my stuff. If dragging and dropping was what you had in mind, buy it.

Man, if I had 8 inches, I would find a better use for it :P

RE: New external HDD. Thoughts?
ive got about 3 external smaller harddisks and what i would want now is a 1TB RAID5 with Firewire800. that way ur data is very very safe and the transfer rate is also optimal (cause otherwise its would take ages to backup and i wouldnt bother). right now i have a harddisk enclosure from Synology, it supports esata, usb2.0, and LAN so its a NAS drive, it has a complete webserver with PHP and MySQL too. works perfectly

Or something like that. Putting them together yourself would save you close to a hundred dollars. The downside is that you wouldn't get the same functionality as you would with the pre-made external drive (No software for incremental backups).
I used to have one of my dvd burners in an external enclosure, and I can tell you that it's a handy thing to have.
yeh my mate works for the computer company and there pc's are realy high tech they run rings around macs they got quad core proccesers and spoon like dat eny ways they cucked out a pc and my mate took the mother board and what not and gave me the terabyte hardrive i bought a encloser of ebay for

RE: New external HDD. Thoughts?
Ive had two enclosures fail on me
lucky the HDD themselves are okay
I think the power circuits inside the enclosure failed
Maybe the all in one external HDD are a safer option
