Depends on who you're going on.  I think there's many people who would consider otherwise.  It hasn't even appeared in the top 10 of any "major" anime rating chart I've seen.
Yes, you can't rate an anime series based on the first part of it, but you can rate an anime series without watching things from different genres. :P
Watching different genres may change your ideas, but then, there's so many other things which may as well, such as lifestyle decisions.

It's not really a question of whether u "can' or "cannot" rate an anime based on some given factor. It's a question based on the quality of the rating.

All factors u mentioned will cause inaccuracy in your ratings.

Rating based on the 1st few episodes may be inaccurate because the 1st few episodes may not reflect the rest of the anime.

Rating when you've only watched things from a single genre leads to a narrower scope, and less basis to make a comparison on, and thus it will also effect the accuracy of your ratings.

The magnitude of the inaccuracy will depend on the magnitude of the factors. So u can't really say that your ratings when you've watched no other genre will necessarily be more accurate than the ratings when u only watched the 1st few episodes either. I all depends on how many of the starting episodes u watched, what kind of anime it is, how much did u limit yourself to one genre and heaps of other factors.

So what would be "accurate" then?  Can you have "accurate" ratings?
Ratings, being completely subjective, can't really be assigned to accuracy beyond what the person believes.

Assassinator Wrote:Rating based on the 1st few episodes may be inaccurate because the 1st few episodes may not reflect the rest of the anime.
No, it's because you aren't rating the series, but rating the first few episodes (and perhaps what you think the rest is like).

So, what should you do then?  Try all those factors?  Opinions are opinions, nothing else.  They may appear "inaccurate" in one's eyes, but can't be considered "wrong".
So as you've said, watching more than one genre doesn't guarantee more "accurate" ratings, just like saying x may equal 10 doesn't necessarily help you find x.  So point doesn't work :P

Lol @ off-topic-ness.

Ok, if a proffessor of literature and a primary school kid were to both rate the same (lets say university level) essay, which person do u think will give the better rating?

Would u not agree that the proffessor's ratings would be more "accurate"? Or would u think/value the 2 ratings exactly the same.

Completely subjective doesn't mean u can't say which one is a more accurate, or a better rating. The professor is obviously in a better possition to rate, and will give a more "accurate" rating.

Did i say anything along the lines of looking at all the factors?

What I'm saying is that it's not that u "can" rate an anime based on the 1st part of it. It's just that u won't give an accurate rating.

Hell, u "can' rate an anime by just reading it's title, but most likely u'll give a really bad rating.

ZiNgA BuRgA Wrote:So as you've said, watching more than one genre doesn't guarantee more "accurate" ratings, just like saying x may equal 10 doesn't necessarily help you find x.  So point doesn't work :P

That's like saying doing more practise before a test doesn't always guarantee a better result. If u put it that way, yeah, it's not guaranteed. But what does that prove? nothing. It's a weak argument.

Theoretically, nothing is ever garunteed. Even the most obvious things aren't true 100%.

Practise gives u an increased chance of getting a good result. And that's what matters, not whether it's a guarantee or not.

Having a broader spectrum helps u make better judgements on the quality of anime. Of course it's not a guaruntee, but someone who has seen 1000 anime series will more likely give a more accurate rating than someone who has seen 2.

Oh, wee're not forcing u to change your ratings.

If u really believe that's how they should be, then keep it that way :)

Neither.
There is no "better" rating.
If you want to take a certain perspective, then you may select one of the two, but if you don't have a certain perspective, then you can't say one is better than the other.

For example, if the document was targeted at a school age group, yet it used university level literature, who would give a better rating?  Professor may like it, but if kids don't understand it, it's useless.

Assassinator Wrote:Did i say anything along the lines of looking at all the factors?

No you can't rate an anime by just reading the title, because you're rating the title, not the content.  I'm assuming that "rating an anime" refers to "rating the content of an anime".

Assassinator Wrote:That's like saying doing more practise before a test doesn't always guarantee a better result. If u put it that way, yeah, it's not guaranteed. But what does that prove? nothing. It's a weak argument.

Put it around the other way, it's a weak argument as well, as you're presuming correlation between the two.
To some people, more practice may improve test results.
To some people, practice may have no impact on test results.
To some people, more practice may worsen test results.

Assassinator Wrote:Having a broader spectrum helps u make better judgements on the quality of anime. Of course it's not a guaruntee, but someone who has seen 1000 anime series will more likely give a more accurate rating than someone who has seen 2.
Again, what is accurate?
To me, you can only give an inaccurate rating if you rate against your beliefs.

Whether or not someone else believes that it reflects the "true nature" of what is being rated is a completely different aspect.  I think this is what you mean by "accurate".
If that's the case, then watching more genres may make others believe that your ratings will be more representative (or a more "accurate" representation) amongst all anime and less of a personal rating.
