with vlite you an remove the things that you don't need from Vista. .

like the other languages, the tablet PC option, and MUCH MORE! you can delete almost anything using this program

for windows XP i suggest you use nlite. same but for XP and lower.

my vista runs very smooth because of this tool. .

thank you Zinga for introducing it to me

RE: Holy **** Vista really eat much RAM!
Wait until you try Vista x64 - it takes up about 50% more RAM than the 32 bit version...

I've gotten Vista down to about 230MB average (nothing running) without forced deallocation (forcing everything onto the page file).  Still unreasonable for my purposes.
I have 1GB, but it's dual channel DDR500 (I prefer speed over capacity).  Hehe, my RAM setup is still faster than most DDR2 setups today :P

RE: Holy **** Vista really eat much RAM!
lol i used to have vista ultimate on my pc (1.5ghz Athlon, 384mb ram, running dual monitors) with onboard graphics and a 8mb video card (fudge the memory it has tv tuner)...

i just can't say i had any problem using vista, everything was running at a somewhat decent speed (even though it had a 100% in idle), but i had a little problem with the activation, so i went back to xp...

Get Autoruns and disable unnecessary stuff.
A tonne of applications will install startup processes, but ~90% of them are unnecessary.

Also get Process Explorer NT and take a screenshot of that.

RE: Holy **** Vista really eat much RAM!
mine is always someplace in the 61% of ram usage, but i noticed that the windows ram use decreases when you use certain programs for a large period of time then returns to normal on exit
