I'd probably disagree with you there. Whilst there will almost always be exceptions and people who need to use special "tools" (OSes), PCs are synonymous to Windows (so much so that Apple uses this in their campaigns despite Macs technically being PCs). Windows has like a ~94% market share or similar, which I think is probably as close to total domination as anyone's going to get. They've lost ground to Linux (which is still a very small minority on the desktop at around ~1%) and MacOS (~5%) in recent years, but Windows nonetheless still dominates the market. Whether they are able to maintain this into the future is something else though.
And I don't think being open is much of a selling point to the majority of users. Just take a look at Windows vs Linux.
