but usually I get up to do it walk right up to them and then chicken out XD
this results in my looking like a weirdo for walking up to a girl and staring at her for no apparent reason...

I do wonder what your friend would think though If you suddenly asked her right before him...
maybe he would think you were trying to 'borrow' her away just because he likes her...
I would at least tell your friend first or maybe jokingly tell him to back off because you wanted her first... Idk
