U won't really understand unless u've actually read one. It's the same as people who never seen anime saying it's kiddy cartoon spoon meant for 7yo kids, while althought that's true sometimes, it's mostly not the case.

Not really dating sims. The difference being dating sims have storylines almost completely about hooking up with girls and stuff, while visual novels often have better more anime-like storylines... well, the better ones atleast, the rest are dating sims.

U ever seen anime series like Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night, Kanon, AIR, Shuffle, Da Capo, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien... they are all based off visual novels, with the earlier few examples having pretty much nothing to do with hooking up with girls.
