I learned that when I was 6 years old and played with the "stuff" that came out of the thermometer. Mom told me it was mercury and I could get mercury poisoning from playing with it.

according to my physics teacher, if you actually had contact with real mercury, you have quite a chance of having cancer eventually... so you have to be careful... but most likely you played with mercury-chrome... which is safe... and red...
