Unless you rush really early, Terran would just be sitting behind their wall (for lost temple that is. Some maps u can't make the wall), and any early attack will be futile. Which kinda highlights the importance of scouting them.
Like I said. It was only if wee got stopped somehow. It usually would involve a really good microer who is teamed with his 2v2 partner who would be rushing at us at the same time and wee make some blunder like try to fend him off. By the time wee do, the other guy has 4 rines and starts microing even more, and before you know it, he has about 12 or 16 rines, which can beat pretty much any rush from another race if he micros correctly. Just run lock onto nearest unit, run, nearest unit, run, take a corner to make all units change into a line again, nearest unit, etc.
Speaking of microing... time for a rundown of my favorite SC map :)
Of course, like I said, I was a HUGE microer because I played a map called "V-tec Paintball Skillz" for about 5 years. I played a little melee (only have about 550 or so games on my account) but I constantly played that UMS map. It was basically a form capture the flag with paper rock scissors and extra weapons added, and the paper rock scissors can be upgraded... oh, and sometimes paper would beat scissors! And by that, I mean it was fbat, temp, rine, goon, ling, hydra. Those were the units you could choose from. You'd start as an invincible civilian who could go to one of the nearby tubes, which were not all next to each other, adding some strategy to where an enemy was in your base. Depending on which tube you went to, that would decide what unit you became. Also, if you didn't like your unit, or got a kill and needed to change quickly before you died, or if you were being chased, you could take your civilian to the nearby crysallis to turn back into a civilian. Also, there were no abilities like lockdown, storm, or hallucination or anything in the game, which was why it was called "skillz" version.
The 3 best units at the start, and majority of the game were ling, goon, and rine. Ling killed almost anything if it got up to them, even fbat. He could take on fbat, rine (if the rine isn't ready), goon, hydra. If he was facing a good microer, the goon could win with 1 hp left on the goon. He'd shoot a shot, ling would hit then stand still, goon runs away, shoots, gets hit, shoots, ling is dead. If you didn't micro, the cooldown caused goon to die. He always beat rine, unless he was moving (only newbies use move), because it took 3 shots from rine to kill him, while goon killed rine in 1 hit. Rine died in one hit, but he killed lings usually, because it took him just two shots. However, he could kill fbat, hydra, rine and goon. The rest were just there for strategic purposes, like temp (actually tassadar in later maps, but was reg temp in original) for if there is a lone rine next to the temp tube, meaning he'd appear and kill rine in one shot. Hydra had shorter range than rine and was slower, so he was somewhat useless.
At 5 kills every unit could upgrade at a spot to the left of the map. At 5 kills, goon could turn into fenix, who had the upgraded range, which was very huge, and more damage, as well as an extra 10 health or so. Rine became vulture, which most considered trash, but I loved to use for microing. You just rush in to kill a ling or flag carrier, then run away to a hidden location again. Hydra became hunter killer (also somewhat useless). Ling became devouring one, who was extremely useful, with huge movement and attack speed increase, and damage increase. Fbat became gui montag (fun for killing fc's sometimes), and temp became zeal (still useless). At that point, it was still rine, dev, and fen that made up the attacks for the most part. At 10 kills, fbat and rine upgraded to ghost, which was VERY useful for killing fc's (who are raynor marines), and killing anything light armor biological, such as mutalisks, lings, devs, rines, fbats, zeals, hydras, hk's (hunter killers), temps, fc,
In skilled matches, that is people in the official v-tec channel were all playing, there were strict rules on how to play. Camping had very specific rules. If you saw someone outside base and going straight to the upgrade, you can't shoot them unless they are in your way to the flag. If you meet someone at the upgrade, you can't shoot them and have to let them get back to base. If someone is killed at the upgrade, whoever killed them has to let that person get a kill from the killer. You have to try to leave the base as soon as you capture the flag from the opposing team. You have to try going straight back to your base with the flag, unless there are enemy units out there trying to kill your flag carrier (called fc from now on); then you'd want to have a friend scout parts, while you take a defensive position on a ledge, with cover, and move up little by little.
The fc was rine Raynor. He had 3 extra health, 8 instead of 5 on a regular marine, and had extra range. He was VERY powerful. He did 12 damage, i believe. That killed goons in 2 shots, lings and devs in 1 shot, fbats in 2, temps in 2, hydra in one. Also, since goon does half damage against light armor units, that meant it took 2 shots for goon to kill fc. That meant, that fc usually killed goon before it ever got anywhere near him. Thus, people said make fc try to return flag ASAP, or there is camping. Fenix could easily take out FC because of much longer range. Ghost had longer range and killed fc in 1 shot. Hydra took 2 shots to kill fc. Temp took 2 shots. However, there was a tactic that if the enemy killed both you and your teammate, and started taking the flag back via nearest portal, you and your friend became temps right as he passes that tube, resulting in both temps immediately shooting the fc, killing him. Or if the fc passed the ling tank and you were RIGHT there, you'd become ling and kill fc in one hit. Or double with a teammate, and become goons if fc is right there. That was how the layout was used best. If you returned the fc to your base, you were given 2 civilians, meaning you could have 2 units at a time.
At 15 kills, the game really picked up, with rine becoming tank, fbat became goliath, temp became arbiter (but it was VERY looked down upon to use its cloaking field), ling stayed dev, but some maps made him infested kerrigan, hydra became mutalisk, and goon became archon. All the units were usable at that point. Tank could take out archon if it kept its distance, had a friend, or kept on a ledge, mutalisk could take out anything if it stayed behind a wall, went in for a shot and immediately left, then came back and did it again. Archon could kill any unit at all if it get next to it. Liath could kill muta and helped as an assisting unit to take down archons, arbiter was rarely used, but it had nice range for long air attacks. Its cooldown and damage sucked though. Old units like fenix and ghost were still powerful because of their high damage and usefulness in certain situations. However, if they died you couldn't get them back, because you'd upgrade to the 15 kill units. Ghost and fenix could take down archon, because ghost eats away its shields and goon does the health damage. HK could actually take out an archon if it was microing because of the extra speed, but it had to move right after shooting or it'd die in one shot. The game would stay like this until it ended around 50-100 kills. For every person on a team, the kills to win was increased by 25. Usually games were 2v2, so it was first team to 50.
Whew, well, that is the basics of how the map was played, with most of the tactics unmentioned. There were 3 teleports in the map, and it was a decent sized map for this kind of game. I really hope some of you guys want to play it so wee can get better at microing, and I know what few of the old skilled players who still play it in the channel there are would love fresh meat.
