Just for the record... I don't recommend the hauppage colossus

I had it a while back and it was so bad I took it back...

It can't record any signal above 1080i@30hz... if you do record at 1080i you see horrible scan lines in all video signal
Audio delay was atrocious
and
It doesn't work with FMLE, it's XSplit or nothing as far as actually live streaming things goes

It did nothing I wanted it to do
it was a huge pain
it might be great for recording things with the poorly put together included software and putting them on youtube, but this is not a live streaming solution (the reason I wanted the card)

I instead got a blackmagic intensity pro (PCI version) and I liked it for a while but the drivers had some glitch that would make my PC blue screen every now and then when I'd go to start a recording, and it only supports certain formats up to 1280p I think but not at common scan rates (like 1280p50 and 1280p59.9 ) it didn't play nicely with my graphics card/monitor scan rates at all
and certain games that forced their own scan results would result in the capture card picking up nothing at all and just showing a black screen

not good for a 24/7 livestream deal (which is also what I was trying to achieve)


If you're looking for decently priced well working capture cards,
I'd go with avermedia

haven't checked out the portable version, but it also looks interesting

I like it the one I have
It hasn't caused any weird crashes and it records everything I need it to which is 1280-1080p@any scan rate
I'd recommend it over anything else I've tried

PCI-E slots are generally one standard size
16x, 8x, 1x whatever is the speed that the bus operates at...
if you put a 1x device into a 16x slot, you'll end up with a lot of extra bandwidth but that's not really an issue
if you put a 16x PCI-E device into a 1x slot you'll end up with a bottle neck, which is bad...
but all in all any PCI-E device you buy SHOULD fit into any PCI-E slot and work to some degree...

If money is not an option and you desperately need a decent 1 slot graphic cards
NVIDIA Titans are available... supposedly it's a "single PCI slot" card, but I've yet to find one that doesn't have a second DVI connector on it ruining this potential

i = interlaced, that's what the "scanlines" are.  If you make it record interlaced, then obviously it will give you interlaced.

I know that's where the lines come from,
but I'm saying in general most monitors run 1080p@60hz

it only records 1080i
and if it does there are visible scan lines... Bad ones
Probably not your normal scan lines... (at least I wouldn't think so, but wouldn't know since I've never had a 1080i anything)

Interlacing is a TV thing.  On TVs, line refresh works like this, first refresh all odd lines (1,3,5,...), then refesh all even lines (2,4,6...), then odd lines again, and so on.  So some people came up with a trick called interlacing, which is combining 2 frames into 1 frame by interleaving it, so all odd lines come from frame 1, and all even lines from frame 2.  Interlacing is used to effectively get double fps on a TV - 30fps interlaced stuff basically looks like 60fps.  And there are other processes like telecine, go research yourself if interested.

Computer monitors don't work that way, so instead you see combing (the proper word, it's not really "scanlines") everywhere.  To make interlaced stuff not look poo poo on your computer, you have to deinterlace it (or IVTC if the source in telecined).

It doesn't matter what your monitor runs, you're capturing TV, so what your TV runs is the only thing that matters.  Because capturing at any frame rate higher than the native frame rate of the TV is just dumb, all you get is loads of duplicate frames.

I use mine to capture video games. My monitors run at 1080p60...

Suit yourself... not saying it won't work, just saying I wouldn't recommend it, I think there are better cards and that I've had bad experiences with that one
