RE: My 2 cents on homosexuality
Yeah. I didn't choose to be gay, consciously or subconsciously. I tried liking girls and I've dated a lot but they'd always leave me because I find them icky. :P I've always liked guys to a degree. I won't have sex with them because I just find sex in general gross.

Nobody is born gay or straight..... you choose your sexual orientation subconsciously without even knowing... It also depends on how you were brought up and if you have had any extreme experiences. Well to be honest for me it was a conscious decision I picked to be straight because that's what seemed right. I didn't even know what was being "gay" I knew daddy + mommy = right. It was when I hit puberty that I made the decision to be straight.

So are you implying that you were born gay? Or it was something that you just took on as your life progressed?

After reading the thread, I don't know where wee agree on where the whole gay thing comes from: birth, choice, or life inflicted.

I'm still with people being born gay, there's no such thing as a 100% model human. (wee're never perfect ;_;)

Also, an interesting thing to note is that one of the models of being gay is that you're attracted to what women are attracted to, that is manly traits such as: beards, muscles, etc. (I have no clue what women are attracted to to be honest) this is also vice versa!

Hell, I'd probably be fooled into having sex with a man if he was totally able to mimic the female form (voice and all). I'm still straight though as I am attracted to female traits, it's what our minds and bodies do to discern which creature to mate with, I think all animals to that at a primitive level, which is probably the reason why wee're all not bisexual.

I think this is one of the fundamental things.
What is considered "gay"?  Being sexually attracted to the same sex, or just merely having a strong relationship with people of the same sex?  If the latter, when does the relationship stop being just 'friends' to 'gay'? (I guess that's a stupid question, since that applies to straight relationships too, but I think the distiction is still important since some people who consider themselves gay may just be friends in someone elses' eyes)

These alternative sexual orientations as well as "non-standard" genders seem to be more of a modern thing - I don't recall hearing much about this sort of stuff if you turn back, say, 50 years (but then, I wasn't alive then, so IDK).  Of course, it's totally possible (as pointed out somewhat in the first post) that the preferences existed in the past, but only have come to light more recently, now that society is relatively more accepting of it.  Even so, I'd still argue that people who may have gone down the gay path may not have even considered the possibility back then.
If this is correct, then I would say that your sexual preference is probably mostly a choice you make (for most cases).  This choice may influenced by factors such as genetics, hormone imbalance or other medical conditions.  Yes, you may get shunned for your choice, but you decide whether you believe it to be worthwhile or not (why does rape occur when there's such a harsh penalty against it?).

As for hate against gays, it's probably society not wanting to accept such a change at present, as mentioned earlier.  However, probably a bigger thing is more the focus on young society; you'll probably grown up with hearing the word 'gay' used to infer negative connotations, eg "this work is gay".  From what I've seen, it's used so much that 'gay' pretty much means 'bad' or 'poo poo'.  Combined with the fact that teens often want a sense of belonging 'with everyone else' or 'being normal', they may have a strong sense of believing that straight is the way to go and will often tease those who don't conform to the norm.
Society changes though - at least from what I've seen with racism, I'm sure this form of sexism will go away eventually.

I don't think that's fundamentally true. There are plenty of people who themselves are rather fem personas, who are themselves gay and in a relationship which a butch person

Although your logic holds true for them, their partner was clearly not attracted to masculine traits in these people, and yet is still happy in a healthy relationship

RE: My 2 cents on homosexuality
i think homosexuals have the right to their choice... to be honest i don't really care who people feel attracted to. as long as homosexuals appreciate that i am not a gay man and don't try to force their lifestyles down my throat (no pun intended) then i really don't care how they lead their lives...  but the way i see things is that gays, like many other minorities tend to use terms like racist and homophobic as a blanket whenever people don't want to embrace their ideas or lifestyles... I'm against racism and prejudice and as long as someone is happy with being a homosexual then they shouldn't allow peer pressure to affect them in life and they shouldn't feel the need to harass people who have no issue with homosexuality but choose not to embrace that lifestyle themselves...

RE: My 2 cents on homosexuality
Actually, as a mother produces more sons, the probability of sons being homosexual increases. Some of my lecturers reckon this is because once a mother has 4 or so offspring, her genes are secure, and so further sons who stay around the home and defend and look after the family are more of a bonus than another penis.
In Samoa, they have a long established culture of "Fa'afafine", effeminate gays who have been part of Samoan culture since forever, and have an important role in childcare and the like. From my learnings from Biol116 this year, I have come to understand homosexuality is the result of multiple factors, both environmental and genetic, but neither exclusively, and sexual attraction is established very early on in life.
But wee're all people here and everyone should have the right of marriage, adoption, love and all the things. The bible is an alright guy most of the time, but here he's well out of order.
