EDIT: because i wasn't satisfied, i did MORE research that proves my theory
as said here:

Gold contacts maintain a better connection, longer.

Like Tom posted.....a search will bring up the reasons why.

found on this forum asking the exact same question wee have been pondering
http://forums.techguy.org/random-discuss...uitry.html
You're looking at the wrong thing.  Copper corrodes - I think everyone knows that.
However, silver doesn't corrode easily, and is cheaper than gold, plus has higher conductivity (though this point is probably moot).  If anything, I'd expect the cost to be a significant factor.  At time of writing, silver is around 49 times cheaper than gold: http://www.kitco.com/market/

UH!
MUST...
SOLVE PROBLEM... OR MY BRAIN WILL IMPLODE!

you know, maybe its BECAUSE gold has a higher melting point...
the gold in motherboards is only about 9 carat from what i read, so price isn't the issue (same thing could be done to silver i strongly believe)
OK! What about rarity? america, along with 90% of the world has STOCKPILES of gold, but not of silver, and look at this
Quote:Both are finite commodities. Both get used in ways that destroy the commodity. Both have had the easy stuff pretty much found. Both find fewer and fewer additional sources AND are more and more difficult ( expensive) to obtain and produce.

Both have growing demand Worldwide. Both are used in more and more technologies even if in smaller and smaller amounts.
Both have fewer and fewer above ground reserves.

Most of the Gold man has ever produced is still available in one form or another.

The manipulators will eventually lose their control of silver. When that happens Silver could get as expensive as Gold. History has shown times when that has been the case.

DYODD,
Gb

according to DYODD, (or gb, idk) silver can get pretty hard to find at some points, if that happens to gold, then all wee have to do is turn to the stockpile, ok, so is that in the right direction?

Doubt it.  I can't see many such electrical equipment being designed for >900C temperatures.

So 37.5%?  That's still around 18 times the price of silver.

You'd expect price to reflect supply if this is the case.
Besides, the available stockpile of silver is irrelevant to an one of those companies.  All they need to care about is cost.
If it's cheap, they'll keep buying it, effectively pushing the price up.  But obviously, that's not happening.  I don't see anyone able to exort so much market power that they can control such a large global commodity market - not that it'll do them any good to artificially keep prices down.

its gold... trust me

Ok...

You managed to get your hands on gold and replaced parts of your USB with it... You somehow managed to convince your father to let you do that when you can't convince him to let you install your own OS on your computer (which is a Pentium 3).  Also, you self claimed your were a 16yo.

Also...
1.  Buying a new USB stick would cost you less than getting the gold.
2.  You won't really be able to see that much speed improvements unless the whole path is gold, which it definitely isn't.
3.  5 minutes to do 1GB is fast now?  If you can't hit at least 20MB/s speed (which would let you do 1GB in less than a minute), then the problem is with your flash drive's read/write speeds, or you're on USB1, or you have serious other problems.
4.  I doubt your OS can down your USB copy speeds by as large an amount as you claim (more than 5x compared to normal).  Copying speeds should be mostly hardware dependent.
5.  And even if it is software dependent like you claim, why the hell are you modding the hardware to remedy that?

And in the screenshot, that's not the color of real gold, that's just gold colored paint.  Also, didn't you say you replaced the connectors on the inside with gold?  Yet your screenshot only shows the outside, which is absolutely no different from a standard USB stick...

Fuck man, at least make it believable.

tl;dr.... cool story bro.

RE: Modded flash drive
ok, so its nothing of that sort i guess, but all of my theories could eventually point to cost.
Im looking at how long gold can last in comparison to silver right now...ok i can't find anything really usefull there. but there has to be a reason why its there, unless properbritish just said that to cook our noodles...
ok there IS gold in computer motherboards, but less than one gram Dotdotdot
anyway, the question remains, why not silver?
OK! i think i have got it this time... *breath out*
According to
http://www.bluenile.com/silver-jewelry/silver-education
silver is very easily damaged, now let me go see about gold,
ok the same website (http://www.bluenile.com/gold-jewelry/gold-education) «- that's a different page, gold is very strong, and is the most malleable metal, so maybe its because gold is easier to work with, and is stronger... therefore, still so the computer will last longer

were using it in a motherboard, not a hammer. still doesn't hold up. and silver is easily malleable, and theyre less easily damaged and less malleable when mixed into alloys anyway.

making an alloy out of it would add resistance, and it would no longer be the best conductor possible, and i bet that making it an alloy would raise prices quite a bit

its an alloy when its mixed with other metals, unless i lack a fundamental understanding of metalurgical practices. so, since they only use 9 karat gold in motherboards, theyre using an alloy. and everyone knows 9 karat gold is cheaper than 24 karat gold...
