I must be imagining things then.  but yeah, if you only keep one save, and you do happen so save at a bad time, you're pretty screwed, while that can never happen with checkpoint based saves, as the checkpoints are selected to sort of prevent that kind of stuff.

I made that mistake once in FFIV for the DS, otherwise I normally do keep multiple saves if the game allows it.

But some games still fail at savestates. FFTA and Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 come to mind. You just do a quicksave, if it doesn't go the right way, then load without saving, and the quicksave is back.
