Checkpoint based saving
I haven't played a lot of games (especially on console), but it seems that most console games still adopt a checkpoint based saving system (with some like Final Fantasy allowing you to save anywhere in the overworld). Most PC games don't seem to use this checkpoint system - you can save anywhere, though the game may automatically save when you reach a checkpoint.
Personally this has been a turn off for me for a number of games, as I really don't know how much time I can dedicate when I do begin to play something.
What do you think of checkpoint based saving? Do you think this improves the game by enforcing certain restrictions? Or why do you think it's still used?

RE: Checkpoint based saving
Sometimes its convenient, for instance after you beat a real bad-donkey boss, but sometimes its inconvenient, for instance when u fight through a zillion creeps and face the boss and die and hae to go back to fight through a zillion creeps again to face the boss.

RE: Checkpoint based saving
I don't mind check point saving as long as there's a quick save with it.

FF, FFII and FFIII didn't have them.
Well for FF technically you can call inns save points but you can save any where any time on the world map if you have the sleeping bags, tents or cottages.
FFII you can save anywhere on the world map.
FFIII I don't really remember but I think the conditions are the same as II's

Agreed! Resident Evil 5 i keep having to do the same spoon part over and over because i end up only getting 15-30 minutes to play and each 'chapter' is about an hour long :( only 2 chapters left...hopefully i can finish them some day.
I much prefer a save anywhere feature in a game.

I agree. It's especially annoying when something suddenly comes up and you're forced to stop playing. Even console games should adopt every man's favorite portable game option: Quicksave.

RE: Checkpoint based saving
although quick save quick load is cool, but it allows many things that shouldn't be.
like Fallout 3. you have to increase your charisma in order to persuade people better. but with quick save and quick load, 3% means 100% with a little more time.
same goes for pokemon on emulator. i used to catch all the legendaries 3 seconds after the battle with any random pokeball. miss, reload, miss, reload.
save points is limited. leaving you without freedom to quit whenever you want, but it makes you try hard, and play a little bit further, or faster.
depends on the game i suppose, i don't prefer any of em. i adapt when i need to.
@schmilk. it does make you want to try harder, doesn't it? :P
the RPG code: When in doubt, level up. and RE5 does have check points in the middle of the chapter. like alot of em as far as i remember.

yeah but if you don't make it to the checkpoint you have to start over..keep in mind I am usually playing games while the baby is sleeping, which only lasts 20-30 minutes :(
And yes...not haveing quick save options definitely makes the game harder because you can't just save before something big and retry that part over and over again.
