RE: Buyer beware, Ubuntu will get you kicked out of school!
I probably think a little differently to you guys. It was her fault for not seeing it used Ubuntu (unless Dell didn't state it clearly), but it was the tech guy's fault for saying that everything would work on it...
As for searching for stuff, not everything necessarily makes sense to someone with little technical computer knowledge, especially if you really have little interest in the issue.

True, but google would have turned up answers to 90% of those issues in seconds, and probably all rather quickly

Drivers would be extremely problematic. And setting up more than you need to isn't exactly entertaining either. Googling the question might take seconds, but reading through the articles, as well as the junk articles, then searching & reading articles to explain what the articles say ("what's WINE??? repository???"), can take well over seconds...

RE: Buyer beware, Ubuntu will get you kicked out of school!
The story sounds to be set up. I mean Ubuntu is great but its not a default OS on Dell computers. She must have asked for Ubuntu when she ordered the laptop. If nothing worked with it she should have demanded a windows OS. Her getting persuaded to use ubuntu by a dell employee just sound too fishy. The story seems too fake and seems to be a creation of microsoft. Ubuntu sure is getting a bad reputation from this. When actually its a very great OS that could actually compete with windows. I just hate how this story will make people turn away from a great free OS, that isn't anything like the news company is making it look like.
Ubuntu FTW!!!

So what's so special about ubuntu? I had it for a while and it just seemed like another OS to me...

MysterySword Wrote:WINE/CrossOver Office work on Ubuntu, but there's still plenty of programs that don't run under them. I just long for the day people start realizing Ubuntu is actually an OS they should make drivers/software for. The companies are just greedy and don't want open-source software...
Completely true, if more people started using ubuntu then companies would have to make linux compatible software. That's what microsoft is worried about. They want to be a monopoly that forces crappy OS's down our throats. If only adobe would make linux compatible software then others would follow.
competition = lower prices for the consumers
