It's cleaner to reformat, removes all traces of the install, including stuff you can't easily delete just by pressing the delete button.
Same reasoning as uninstalling a program vs just deleting all the files.

And that's just fine - except he doesn't really want to mess around with his current 7 install does he?
Like Sky said, it's just a permissions problem. Take ownership or use nurehtix's suggestion and use a live CD.

Lolw ut Sensei, w tf does Windows 7 or anything else have to do with it? He could have MsDOS instead of Win7, and it would still be the same.
I'm just saying reformatting is the only (or easiest) way to completely remove all traces of the XP install. That's it. Actually, I'm not even saying you should reformat it... I'm just explaining why other people are suggesting to reformat it.
And how would it be messing with Windows 7? I mean reformatting the HDD with XP on it obviously, not the other HDD with Windows 7, that would be retarded.

Hold on a second, like boogs thought, wasn't he saying he wants to get rid of the XP folder from the HDD because he has 7 on it and wants more space? In which case deleting it shouldn't be a problem.. reformatting it is over the top. Is there two drives or not? :/

Then he may as well take Sky or nurehtix's advice. If he's resorting to using a 40GB drive then he probably already has data on it so backup doesn't seem like an option, so that rules out formatting it.
Hard drives are cheap as hell anyway why not just get a bigger drive =_=

It might be stopping you because the files are locked, and for good reason...
hes using win7 and he wants to use the extra 10gb being used by the Xp ?
yes you got the point
oh and thanks alot everyone I finally found out how to do it. I got a great program called Unlock Me you just install it right click on the folder choose unlocker and then delete, it unlocks all the files and deletes them all. Though it took about 6 hours and I had to empty the recycle bin ever 10 minutes, cause it got too full and windows would hang. I was awake till 6.15 in the morning but doesn't matter cause now I have 10gb of free space and now I have space to install rainbow six vegas 2 and play it over hamachi!
by the way I tried changing the ownership setting but it still didn't work
I still remember the world from the eyes of a child, Slowly those feelings where clouded by what I know now, Where has my heart gone? An uneven trade for the real world...
