Well she is at the moment - in the same room as me because wee have family over. When she goes back in her room I can play such VNs I suppose.

As for you, since you're probably not into schoolgirls and sob stories (judging how you didn't like Kanon much), probably try something like Utawarerumono.  That's pretty much a tactial RPG, and is about this awesome masked man rolling stuff and being superior, and actually has a rather decent story.

As for conventional novel, The Sword of Truth series is awesome.  Way better than Happy Potter, or Twilight, or whatever else teens these days are raving about.

I recall reading the Belgariad and the sequel, Mallorean, during my high school years, and enjoyed it.
