The proprietary ATI driver works fine as long as you're not on Debian or Ubuntu.

Unfortunately, the Catalyst driver only supports Xorg≤1.13.

Tetris999 Wrote: [ -> ]Unfortunately the open source ones are a lot better, but I'm unable to control the fans with it. This results in the fans going WHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRR to the point that it drives me insane.

If you're using the xf86-video-ati (free) drivers, you can do the following to quiet down the fans:

Code:
# echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile
# echo profile > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method

This sets the card to a low-power mode, which also makes the fans very quiet. I have yet to see any disadvantages of this.

Another option is messing around with pwmconfig/fancontrol, but it seemed like too much effort. On the other hand, you have fine-grained control over the fans.

I'll try it out, thanks whjms.

Herpity derpity, I probably should get around to installing a different distro then. (I'm using mint, which is an ubuntu variant, too lazy to change or anything like that).
 hurr durr ubuntu noob
It's not the fact that it's Ubuntu, it's the fact that Canonical and the Debian developers package their own version of fglrx that gets installed regardless of how you install it. It tends to break things quite often (especially on Debian since it doesn't include all of the correct lib32 libraries). If you want to use it, Arch is very nice. The documentation and community is amazing.

There'll be an update for 1.14 in the near future. Sticking on 1.13 isn't a big deal. ATI likes to take their sweet time on updating, though.
