This is going to be a quick one because I need some sleep.

I was just scratching my head over if I'm just being ignorant or whether an operating system, namely windows, is objectively bad for what I do.

At the moment I main linux, but problems with ATI cards (yes, it doesn't render spoon as fast as it should and it has tearing issues, these problems aren't apparent under windows) and lack of commercial software support, namely video GAEMS/photoshop/painter etc, is just driving me up a wall.

One of the things I've come across is namely the "problems" with operating systems are not really the operating systems themselves but just in part with the users ignorance. I guess you can apply this to a lot situations/people where they defer incompetence to an object instead of looking for a solution due to their misunderstanding of the system.

There's no way windows can be the most used operating system because it's popular, I just feel like I'm doing it wrong.

Some of the things I enjoy about linux:
- IT related tasks are a snap with shell scripting
- Package managers are awesome
- Programming in general is so...fluid, coupled with shell scripting, it makes compiling, writing and testing really easy. Per example: compile && execute program, I don't know how to do that under windows cmd
- Windows tiling is great, windows can detect each others edges, easy to line up things, etc. I don't recall this in windows, maybe I've missed it somewhere (CAN YOU FOLLOW THE CONTEXT, EH EH EH?)
- I like gnome3

- Easily customized with different desktop environments/window managers and the best part is, NO_FUCKING_PATCHES.
- It is not a clusterfudge to understand (ok this is a jab at windows, but mainly one of the reasons why I use linux is that it comes pretty naturally to me as opposed with all the spoon windows employs)

Am I just too ignorant to find such features in windows? I know there is vim for windows but that's in a GUI and it's not even contained in the terminal from what I recall (I use vim from the terminal). There's also powershell, but that lacks GNU tools and utilities + it has a funky methodology in shell scripting (which seems all right, but not something I want to really adopt since it's missing out on the former) so that's another eh.

I could just use MAC OS X but fudge the company behind that operating system, personally I like what the operating system is, but I don't support the ideology behind it. It also is another clusterfudge of patching to get the required functionality (from what I've read anyway). If linux had the commercial support it had, that'd be awesome, then again, that just wouldn't be linux now would it?

So yeah, can I be as productive in Windows as I am in Linux? Right now I just can't see that, but I want to be.

actually hackintosh systems are incredibly easy to make/do now

As long as you have core i3-i5-i7
You should be fine for the cpu

most newer graphics cards ati especially are supported natively in 10.8.3
if not motherboards with HD3000 HD4000 HD5000
are also native derp

Sound cards can be used with the voodoo driver
But i have had no problem finding my sound card
And i use an old Cmedia card
Legit like 5 years old and i found active 64bit drivers for 10.8

Networking is a pain.
But Wireless g-n-ac Dongles with the right driver *most wireless usbs have drivers for osx included* Or you can search online for the kext - really easy

Motherboards Are a bit of a pain though.
Gigabyte boards are the best for hackintosh systems
Otherwise you need to patch and create your own dstd
Not that hard at all.

most mother board makes and models have allready got a dstd patched from chimera updates also

Alternative shells exist, though IDK if it's anything you want.

Have you tried the alternative ATI drivers?
I presume the games/Photoshop doesn't run nicely in Wine - and a VM doesn't like it either?

There's also coLinux, but IDK what that's like.

That's the thing though, it's not worth it to use an operating system that doesn't want you to use it if you don't play by its rules. What happens when an update comes out? or they patch something? It's just silly. No offense, but fudge Apple.

Unfortunately the open source ones are a lot better, but I'm unable to control the fans with it. This results in the fans going WHIRRRRRRRRRRRRRR to the point that it drives me insane.

Cygwin sounds nice, but the windows desktop is just donkey...ugh.

What I'm considering on doing is buying more ram (4GB's, a small amount for todays computing) and just running a linux virtual machine atop of windows (since windows is the one that hogs the graphical capabilities of the desktop. I guess sharing folders between them will make the experience better as well, finally putting that quad core to use.

As for my laptop, just gonna have to deal with dual booting (but then again I don't do many GAEMING/GRAFIX on a laptop)

I used to just unplug the fan on the card, and downclocked it, as the fan speed couldn't be changed at all. I suppose that solution doesn't work for everyone.

I'd just run a minimal Windows install and use a VM for most of your tasks, as you've suggested.

Why would you need to patch things if most of the hardware is supported natively
its no different then windows update
As long as your computer is set to something like a mac pro.
not a laptop or mac mini
it won't instal efi updates or bios updates

not that those would even matter it has nothing to update lol
the bootloader passes all of that

i don't mind the mac os
mainly for artwork and music
for everything else its gay

been playing bioshock, 1-2 and infinite on pc though D= sooo good
finshed infinite last week
ending was double you tee eff man :/

If you're using the xf86-video-ati (free) drivers, you can do the following to quiet down the fans:

# echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile
# echo profile > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method

This sets the card to a low-power mode, which also makes the fans very quiet. I have yet to see any disadvantages of this.

Another option is messing around with pwmconfig/fancontrol, but it seemed like too much effort. On the other hand, you have fine-grained control over the fans.
